Q & A with Alain from The Alain Guillot Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting in January 2018. It was a new year resolution, after spending more than 10 years listening to different podcasts, I decided to start my own.

In 2018 I made two resolutions. To learn how to speak in public, so I joined a Toastmasters club; and start a podcast. And to start a podcast, so I started with Libsyn.

Libsyn was the host that my favorite podcasters were recommending, so I followed their advice.

Why did you start podcasting?

The main reason is that I love listening to podcasts. I have my headphones on practically all day long. I listen to podcasts at every moment I can. I think my average is about two hours per day.

I closed my business (a dance school) because I was suffering from burn out. I decided to take a year off from work and I went into a self-improvement wave. Among the new challenges, I took upon myself that one year off was to create a podcast.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

My podcast is “Alain Guillot Podcast”. In the beginning, it was about personal finance, how to save more, spend less, and invest the rest. But after the first year, I felt that I was repeating the same thing over and over again.

During the second year, I shifted focus. Now I talk about personal development and entrepreneurship. It’s an interview show, but occasionally I do a monologue.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

I use an Audio-Technica microphone and a Focusrite sound mixer which were the donations of my ex-wife (she used to do voice work).

To communicate with my guests, I use Skype. I like free stuff.

For recording the voice I do something that I haven’t seen other people doing. I use Audacity to record my voice. But then I go to Audacity one more time, I press the shift key, and the right side of my mouse, and I get a menu that allows me to use audacity one more time to record the voice of my guest in a separate track. Once the recording is finished I transfer my guest voice track to the first audacity window and I can edit their voice and my voice in the same window. See the image below.

I have a WordPress blog, where I publish every episode.

How do you promote your podcast?

My favorite way to promote my podcast is to harass, bribe, or beg my family and friends to listen to it. I can be very obnoxious at times.

The second way is by promoting it on social media. I have become a LinkedIn influencer with the sole purpose of promoting my podcast.

Finally, I lean heavily on my guests to share our interviews with their social media.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I wish I knew how much fun this is and I wish I would have started 9 years earlier, after my first year of listening to podcasts.

I get to have conversations with extraordinary individuals, I learn a lot, and above all, I have lots of fun.
