Q & A with Rob Lee from Getting To The Truth In This Art
When did you start podcasting?
I always would record things here and there in high school so early 2000s.
I was a creative person but I dabbled in various pursuits from painting to writing. I enjoyed the dabbling but I never felt fully compelled, driven to create in those mediums.
In February 2009, I felt compelled to record my thoughts on some sports news. At that time, I listened to a lot of talk radio and Smodcast. That was the fuel. I consider my start to be 2009 and I’ve been podcasting ever since.
Why did you start podcasting?
How I would answer this question has changed. Initially, I wanted to be heard. I thought I had a valid and interesting perspective and I believed it was worth being heard.
I wanted that for my friends as well. All of my friends are from Baltimore. I believe all of my friends are unique and talented. Over the years that belief became more resolute and refined.
In 2017, I started thinking how am I adding value – I would regularly do check-ins with myself and my co-hosts on why we’re podcasting. I just don’t want to be another podcaster and are we worthy of being listened to.
So I changed my approach a bit to add more value and focused on being entertaining while being informational. A few years later, Getting To The Truth In this Art came about. I married my love of my hometown Baltimore MD with my pursuit of showing we have so much talent here – I wanted to do my part. I feel that’s how I add value.
What’s your show about?
Getting to the truth in this Art is an interview series with artists, entrepreneurs and tastemakers positively driving the culture in Baltimore.
As a Baltimore Native, I’ve always heard about this bad, maligned reputation that Baltimore has. I feel that Baltimore is not better or worse than Philadelphia, New York or Washington D.C. but generally people don’t consider Baltimore to be in that conversation.
Baltimore is a predominantly Black city but tourists typically learn about the Inner Harbor and sports – that more sanitized parts of the city that aren’t indicative of the whole place. The other thing people learn about is the danger, the crime rate and so on.
I want to show Baltimore is a place worthy of attention, worthy of acknowledgement, a place filled with talented artists, successful entrepreneurs and just great people; not used as negative clickbait.
What’s your podcasting set-up?
I bought a house in 2016 and converted the spare bedroom into my ‘creative lair’ – so my recording studio, art and Funko Pops are in that room.
My recording set up consists of a laptop – I use a Macbook on occasion but usually a Samsung laptop, Audacity software, Fast-track Pro with Dynamic AT microphone when I’m recording Mastermind Team’s Robcast or Getting To The Truth in this art.
I use a Behringer 1204 Xenyx USB when multiple guests are on.
Zoom is part of the show currently since we’re in the midst of COVID. Pre-Covid I would podcast from a comedy club every Friday.
How have you promoted your podcast?
I’ve used a mix of regular social media posts (Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram) including memes related to the podcast topics and audiograms, I’ve put together a small email marketing campaign and text messaging friends asking them to listen.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
I wish I knew how to delegate tasks. I’m more of a one-stop-shop. I learned that approach has taken energy and time away from other facets of the show.
In the years I’ve learned to delegate and hire freelancers to help with certain things like editing or even social media. That’s helped, all of these things take time and can take away from actually creating the content.
