Q & A with David Race from Monstrosity

When did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting with a different podcast I’d created, around 2015. But earlier in my career, I had been a radio DJ for a long time. So, I wasn’t really new to being around a mic, in the radio/podcast type environment.

I did the first podcast for only a handful of episodes, and then took a break to do a TV pilot related to that podcast, and sort of “never came back”.

Eventually, I had the time to do a podcast again, and decided to start a new podcast, somewhat similar to the old one, but with slight differences.

That “new” podcast is “Monstrosity” (MonstrosityPodcast.com), and it’s now been going for a couple of years.

Why did you start podcasting?

As a comedian here in Los Angeles it seemed like every comedian I knew had a podcast. For a few years I resisted starting one. It felt like I’d be going back to something I’d already done, since I’d been a radio DJ for a long time, before I was a comedian.

But eventually, I came around to doing a podcast, when I felt I had a unique premise for the podcast, that I felt was interesting and worth doing. That led to me taking the leap and doing the first, and now my second podcast.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

My podcast is “Monstrosity” or “Monstrosity with David Race” (MonstrosityPodcast.com).

I bring together TV celebrities, movie celebrities, or rock stars, and sometimes comedians, in studio live, with me in L.A… And at some point in the show we talk to a paranormal expert by feed (from wherever they are).

Lots of times the UFO, ghost, or Bigfoot expert we’re talking to is a celebrity in their own right, as they’re often the host of a TV show themselves (on Travel Channel or whatever).

The whole thing was born out of my interest in these topics, and the fact that I can speak about them authentically with passion and knowledge, and some real life experiences.

There’s often a comedy bit during the show, and some funny discussion with the celebrities I have in-studio about their careers. But at some point the episode “turns” towards the paranormal guest interview. There’s some zig and zag between funny stuff, deep interview, and creepy stuff. Overall, I think it’s a really unique show, and an interesting package.

COVID has changed the show a bit, because we haven’t been able to have the celebrities in-studio for a while, and have been having all the celebrities on from a safe distance by remote feed. So, the paranormal guests and the celebrities have been on at separate times, in each episode, during COVID.

We haven’t been able to put them together in the odd “monster mash up” it was pre-COVID. Hopefully, soon we’ll be able to get back to the regular in person celebrity interviews we had going before COVID.

What’s your podcasting set-up?

We record our show at a professional recording studio in Los Angeles. I couldn’t even tell you what equipment they have. I can just say, it’s very expensive stuff!

How have you promoted your podcast?

Monstrosity is promoted via regular Twitter, Instagram and Facebook posts. I also do some promotional interviews. Mostly on other podcasts and radio shows.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I think you can overcrowd a podcast. You can have too many people on at one time. We’ve got it down now to basically just me and the celebrity alone in the studio, and the paranormal guest by remote. That’s feeling like the right amount of space for the show to breathe right.
