Q & A with Catherine and Rosa from Latinx Lens

When did you start podcasting?

We released our first episode in June 2020, but prior to creating Latinx Lens, we had been guests on other podcasts.

Catherine had a movie podcast that was on hiatus at the time. Once we released our first episode, we haven’t looked back!

Why did you start podcasting?

While she was taking a film history course, Rosa was disappointed to discover that only a page and a half from a 500-page textbook discussed Latinos in Hollywood.

She posted on Twitter about wanting to start a podcast. Catherine joined as co-host, and the rest is Latinx Lens history.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

Latinx Lens highlights Latinx representation and their contribution in film and television.

Every month, we highlight one Latinx filmmaker or actor with an in-depth episode, diving into three films from their filmography.

We discuss the person through their work and throw in our unique lens when talking about these films. The rest of the month, we review newly released films or series from all genres and backgrounds, adding to the much-needed diversity in film and television criticism.

What’s your podcasting set-up?

We record Rosa’s audio over Zoom. Catherine uses a Rodecaster and Shure mic to record her audio. The podcast is edited on Adobe Audition.

Catherine is a self-taught podcast editor, and there were plenty of learning curves to conquer throughout the past year.

How have you promoted your podcast?

We have promoted our podcast via social media – Twitter, Instagram, Facebook – and to our friends who have supported us.

We also appear as guests on other movie podcasts where we get the opportunity to promote what we do at Latinx Lens.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

That it’s okay to not be perfect. As we wanted to make sure to honor each person we highlight, we can’t cover all the bases in one episode. So, we’ve learned to embrace what pours out during each session and be okay with that.

Also, we’ve learned that it’s okay to reach out to the community for support. We recently started a Patreon and seeing the response and support from our listeners in that way has been amazing.

LatinX Lens takes a deep dive into the contributions of Latino talent in Hollywood from the front to the back of the camera. This podcast teaches you more about Hollywood and those who have built it up to what it is today.  Particularly Latinos.  You can listen to Latinx Lens on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

If you’re thinking of using your voice to spread history or awareness about a subject you are passionate about you can try podcasting.  Rosa and Cat did just that with Latinx Lens, they saw a way to expand the knowledge base and spread awareness of the impact Latinos have had in the Film and TV industry in the US and abroad, through podcasting.

Maybe you have heard about podcasting but are not sure where to start.  We can help!
