Q & A with Mayra from Debt-Free Latina

When did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting during the pandemic in September 2020

What made you think about starting a podcast?

I first thought about it a whole year before in early 2019, but didn’t know where to start.

I enjoy listening to podcasts and didn’t see many podcasts about money from Latinas.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

My podcast is Debt Free Latina.

I focus on budgeting strategies, ideas to increase earnings, and how to build financial independence.

What’s your podcasting setup?

My Podcasting setup has evolved.

I started with a mic and my computer, but currently have a RodeCaster Pro.

For editing, I use Descript, Audacity, and run the files thru Auphonic to ensure my audio levels are great.

How have you promoted your podcast?

I promote my podcast by emailing my list.

In addition, I post on Instagram, Facebook, and Tiktok.

While recording my podcast, I use a tripod to record a vertical visual on my phone and use the video to make IG Reels and TikToks.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

1. Keep learning about the industry.

Technology evolves, and implementing new strategies helps improve processes; however, we have to commit to being lifetime learners.

The first few episodes of my podcast sound horrible!

I left them up because the content is great and it’s who I was in the early stages.

We all start somewhere.

I learned from that and moved on.

Commit to learning, improving, and taking action!

2. You don’t need the latest and greatest equipment.

We all want the coolest gadgets, but the truth is you don’t need them all.

I set milestones.

When I hit a personal milestone I bought a piece of equipment or software that I wanted.

3. It’s ok to change the name of your podcast.

The name of the podcast is a huge commitment, but the truth is, it’s more important to start podcasting!

You can change the name later. I did and it worked out!

4. Find community!

I attend 1-2 events a year.

There’s nothing like meeting people in person!

There are tons of online platforms and memberships to build community in as well. They are also a great option to learn from each other. But there’s no comparison to a face-to-face conversation with someone that understands the podcaster’s struggle.

Get plugged in and find your people!

Mayra Alejandra Garcia recognized back in 2019 that podcasts by Latina women dealing with money were very rare. She took her financial finesse to the mic and began her podcast, Debt-Free Latina with a mission to help others get and stay out of debt. We can all use a little help with that!
