Q & A with Jen from Beauty and The Gi | Brazilian jiu-jitsu

When did you start podcasting?

I’ve been podcasting since 2014.

What made you think about starting a podcast on Brazilian jiu-jitsu?

I fell into podcasting because I have a music background with songwriting and production. Composing music for a podcast led me to a job editing that podcast and that is where I fell in love with podcasting.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

Beauty and the Gi is the name of the podcast. It’s about Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I co-host it with my coach AJ Clingerman. She is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt.

When I started doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2018, I couldn’t find the BJJ podcast that I wanted to listen to. Most podcasts I found at the time about Jiu-Jitsu were really long. They were talking about things well beyond my beginner experience. I couldn’t find any that were hosted by women and were consistently producing new episodes.

So, I set out to create the show that I couldn’t find and asked my coach to co-host it with me. The episodes are usually around 25 minutes or less and often focus on the training experiences that are unique to women in the sport. Our goal is to bring more women to the sport and to help motivate and inspire them to keep training.

It’s a way to build community. It’s not uncommon for many of our listeners to be the only woman on the mat at the school where they train. We want to make Jiu-Jitsu more inclusive and welcoming to everyone.

What’s your podcast set up?

When we are in the same room:

  • Sennheiser e835 microphones
  • Zoom H6 as an audio interface
  • Adobe Audition for recording and editing
  • Sony MDR-7506 headphones for editing
  • Ulysses for writing show notes and keeping notes and ideas for future episodes

Remote Recordings:

  • Riverside.fm for recording
  • Shure MV7 mic (Jen)
  • Samsung Q2U mic (AJ)

How have you promoted your Brazilian jiu-jitsu podcast?

We do most of our episode promotion and listener interaction on Instagram, encouraging listeners to send us questions that we can answer when we record episodes. Then, we re-share when they share an episode and tag us.

I’ve also written jingles to promote new episodes when they release. Here’s an example.

It’s easy to share new episodes directly from Spotify to our Instagram stories.

We’re both active in Jiu-Jitsu groups on Facebook. So, we can share a link to one of our episodes when it is relevant to a topic being discussed. It’s really fun to see when a listener has shared one of our episodes!

Using the Libsyn category feature, we’ve created a “starter pack” of episodes for listeners that are new to the show. We mention it during the intro and include a link to it in the show notes.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

When I started podcasting in 2014, I felt like I had to be an “expert” at something. By the time I started Beauty and the Gi, I had learned that I would actually be a better host because I was following my curiosity. I had so many questions, many of the same questions and struggles that our listeners have. It’s fun to be on this adventure with our audience.

Jen Edds brings her own curiosity about all things Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the podcast she hosts with her coach A.J. Clingerman. Beauty and the Gi features gripping conversations that explore the intersection of jiu-jitsu and life on and off the mat. Made for women at all levels in the sport, it is both informative and inspiring. Give it a listen today on Apple or Spotify! You may want to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu yourself!

Jen Edds started doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2018, but couldn’t find the BJJ podcast she wanted to listen to. They were too long or dealt with things well beyond her beginner experience. None were hosted by women or were consistently producing new episodes. So, she set out to create the show she couldn’t find. What are you looking for? Fill the gap!
