Q & A with Kimberly Sumpter from Sistah’s Connect
When did you start podcasting?
I started podcasting on January 20, 2019. Prior to that, I had been an avid podcast listener and had a strong desire to give it a try for myself. So far, my podcasting journey has been incredibly rewarding!
Why did you start podcasting?
Originally, I decided to create an online forum to connect with other women who also had a strong desire to be a part of something positive and uplifting and who shared similar values.
Over the past two years, that small group evolved into a thriving Facebook community of nearly 2,000 women. I wanted my message of sisterhood to have an even broader reach and creating a podcast seemed to be the perfect segue.
Now, many of those social media followers have become loyal podcast listeners.
What’s the name of your show and what is it about?
The name of the show is Sistah’s Connect.
It is an interview-based podcast that is dedicated to the amazing women that I admire and who have kept me inspired to be the best version of myself. Our conversations are centered around us sharing our own personal life’s journeys and the lessons that we’ve learned along the way and how our experiences are in many ways similar and keep us connected.
It also captures the essence of why expanding our circle and nurturing friendships is so important.
What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.
My setup is pretty simple. Because 85% of my interviews are in person, I invested in a Zoom H6. It is by far the BEST investment that I could have made! I love that it’s portable and that it gives me the flexibility to record from virtually anywhere. For my remote guests, I use SquadCast. I interchange between the ATR 2100 and the Samson Q2U. Both are great microphones with excellent sound quality and are really affordable. I have 2 of each. For editing, I use Audacity on my PC and Auphonic.
How have you promoted your podcast?
I of course promote my podcast using social media but creating intimate lifestyle events tailored to my target audience has been golden. This gives me an opportunity to not only connect with existing and potential listeners but to be fully engaged with them. At times, I’m also able to actually integrate many of their voices and feedback into the podcast episodes.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
I wish that I would have understood at the very beginning of my journey that downloads numbers are not the ONLY measure of success. What I know for sure is that my content, engagement, good sound quality and consistently delivering a clear and concise message to my audience is ultimately what is most important.
If you are a woman looking to connect with other positive and uplifting women, for support, inspiration, fellowship and everything in between you must subscribe to Sistah’s Connect – NOW. It will be the best investment in yourself at any time of the year!
