Q & A with Vinny from Unlatched Mind
When did you start podcasting?
I was contemplating it since August of 2018. Began my research, started listening to Podcasts about Podcasting, started reaching out to guests in Feb of 2019, and released my first episode in April of 2019.
Why did you start podcasting?
I was looking for an outlet for deeper thinking and pondering the bigger questions of the Universe and us as people. I considered blogging but found it to be less of an organic medium for me to dialog with myself and others. Podcasting just felt right.
What’s the name of your show and what is it about?
My show, Unlatched Mind, is a long form discussion format where I discuss topics with experts including neuroscience, religion, morality, philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence and humanity.
What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.
I use Zencaster for VOIP and to record as well as Total Recorder as a backup.
Zencaster works well but I’ve seen some audio drift. I’ve also used Google Voice for VOIP with Total Recorder as the recording software.
Audacity is all I need for editing. I play drums and have several Shure SM57 mics, I use that of my primary mic.
With a Shure A81WS windscreen, the result is a tonal quality indistinguishable from a Shure SM7B.
How have you promoted your podcast?
I share each episode on Facebook and Twitter. My guests share as well on their platforms. As this is a hobby, I try not to make it about marketing or focus on trying to aggressively grow the platform. If that happens, so be it, but I just want to create good content and grow as a person through this work.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
I work in technology so audio editing and sound engineering has not been the big hurdle for me. I wish I know that I’d be battling my overthinking and compulsive tendencies when editing! I’m learning to keep the recording more raw and try not to edit every little thing. A real conversation is my goal, I need to approach editing with that rule in mind more!
