Q & A with Kim from Voice Lessons\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>

\u00a0<\/b>When did you start podcasting?<\/b><\/h3><\/div>

We kicked off the New Year in 2020 with the launch of \u201cVoice Lessons,\u201d but I\u2019d been scrawling the name in the margins of notebooks along with <\/span>podcast episode ideas<\/span> for at least three years before that.<\/span><\/p>

What made you think about <\/b>starting a podcast<\/b>?<\/b><\/h3>

I have a background in radio and radio drama. One of my favorites was a production of \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale,\u201d long before that book became a <\/span>Netflix series<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The way you tell stories using only sound has always fascinated me because when I write, I\u2019m heavily focused on rhythm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I also missed \u201cartist time\u201d in my life. I\u2019ve been busy with my business and so when we started the podcast, it was with the idea of creating \u201cArt\u201disodes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We experimented with a bunch of formats and let the stories dictate the episode flow.<\/span><\/p>

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?<\/b><\/h3>

\u201cVoice Lessons\u201d is a podcast about creativity, visibility and <\/span>how artistic women who lead, take care of their businesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Our guests tend to be creatives who have found themselves unexpectedly starting businesses, or whose art has inspired or supported a movement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We also often critique the culture or a <\/span>broken system<\/span> like in \u201cA Lesson on Equity. Period,\u201d where we spoke with Laura Strausfeld about the fight to eliminate the <\/span>tampon tax<\/span>. Parts for private jets aren\u2019t taxed, but tampons are, seriously?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Or, how in the wake of the murder of <\/span>George Floyd<\/span>, twenty-two-year old Kennedy Mitchum, who was tired of people using the dictionary definition of racism to defend it. So she contacted the editors at <\/span>Merriam Webster<\/span> to get them to change it. <\/span><\/p>

We deal with this in an episode titled \u201cA Lesson on Racism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

One of my favorites this season is \u201cA Lesson on Doing the Right Thing\u201d with a female construction carpenter named Natasha Fritz. <\/span><\/p>

Her story went viral when she called out the hosts of the <\/span>Toronto-based <\/span>construction industry <\/span>podcast, <\/span>The Construction Life<\/span><\/i>, online. She cited remarks about cat-calling and trying to grab women.<\/span><\/p>

What’s your <\/b>podcast set up?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>

We\u2019ve used Libsyn since the start and their support has been super responsive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We\u2019ve used a bunch of apps to record, but right now we\u2019re in Zencastr to record.<\/span><\/p>

In post production, we use Frame.io to share edits between the team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

My \u201cstudio\u201d is my closet and I had a Blue Snowball mic which I loved, but I dropped it.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been dating new mics based on online recommendations. I haven\u2019t found \u201cthe one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/b><\/h3>

We\u2019ve been relying on word of mouth, <\/span>Instagram<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Twitter<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Facebook<\/span><\/a> and our newsletter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Being downloaded in 24 countries makes me happy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>

I wish I trusted my gut more with respect to pace when we started. <\/span><\/p>

We took the advice that you have to do X number of episodes and it has to be weekly\u2014blah, blah\u2014to get traction, but looking back, we simply churned out episodes to <\/span>meet the deadline <\/span>that first year. We were not necessarily mindful of making a <\/span>curated collection<\/span>. We\u2019re doing that now.<\/span><\/p>

Voice Lessons Podcast<\/span><\/i><\/a> is not about singing. It is about using your voice to teach life lessons. Kim interviews creatives who are using their voices and art to inspire art, business and social change. Stories are important in the process of social evolution to listen to this dynamic podcast tune into <\/span><\/i>Apple Podcasts<\/span><\/i><\/a> or <\/span><\/i>Spotify<\/span><\/i><\/a>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/i>As a creative person you don\u2019t often feel like you are business minded. In this podcast we learn that is not always the case and sometimes you have to become business minded.\u00a0 Voice Lessons started because Kim wanted to create a community of great stories that came from artistic women who lead in business or had to jump into creating businesses and became voices for change.<\/b><\/p>
