Podcasting about my motherhood journey gave me the opportunity to put my voice out there. It inspired me to be bold and unapologetic.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q & A with Christie from Vida with Christie Podcast<\/span><\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/b><\/h3>\n

I released my first episode about motherhood on January 1st, 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Previously, I was solely blogging about motherhood, which I started to do in 2010. I was looking for a new medium beyond the obvious next step, which at the time, was vlogging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A friend of mine introduced me to podcasts in 2017 and I kept hearing more and more of them, like on Uber rides.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was very extroverted and talkative growing up. I always had A LOT to say, and my classmates would joke that I should be a radio host or a talk show host. They even named me “most likely to become the next Oprah” in a graduation slideshow. Therefore, this seemed like a natural fit for me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What made you think about starting a podcast focusing on motherhood?<\/b><\/h3>\n

I started podcasting because I wanted to share my lessons and experiences with motherhood, as well as offer support and education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time, my daughter was a toddler and I would blog about typical #momlife topics. Podcasting gave me the opportunity to put my voice out there. It inspired me to be bold and unapologetic about my motherhood journey.<\/span><\/p>\n

I wanted to share a message of motherhood that was genuine and real, but that did not fall into the typical “messy wine mom” or “perfect aesthetic mom” identities that we often see on social media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond this, I knew that there was something unique about the intersections of my own identity, beyond being a mother\/parent, that I could share with my audiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, I often talk about raising a child among two cultures, co-learning with her about our Indigenous-Peruvian identity, the honest parenting approach, and much more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I also do some episodes in Spanish, which is my native language. This allows me to share my content with a wider audience and provide them with access to the education, resources and support that accompany my episode topics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fast forward to 2022, my daughter and podcast are the inspiration for the research I will be completing throughout my MA degree which is in Social Justice Education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I will be examining the pedagogical approaches to decolonizing motherhood and breaking intergenerational cycles, particularly within the demographic of first-generation immigrant parents like myself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s the name of your show and how does it approach motherhood?<\/b><\/h3>\n

My show is called the Vida With Christie Podcast and it is about raising aware and empowered children through breaking intergenerational cycles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea came from my personal motherhood journey and how differently I was raising my child in comparison to how I and my husband were raised. Many of my peers were interested in my approaches as they noticed a difference in my daughter and myself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, people were often amazed that I would never have to raise my voice to my daughter to get her to do what I was requesting. And, how I spoke to her in an honest and age-appropriate manner about “difficult” or “challenging” topics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After receiving multiple comments on my parenting approaches, I thought about how I could share that with the world beyond my blog. Podcasting was it for me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The episodes I have are both solo and with guests, who are experts in their fields academically, professionally or through lived experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As I mentioned, each episode covers a topic related to the overall theme of breaking intergenerational cycles and through that being able to raise aware and empowered children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What this means is that your child is able to grow in a healthier manner than you did with a focus on their well-being, thereby creating a positive impact on the present and future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Decolonizing<\/h4>\n

The colonial aspects of our society cause a lot of the challenges and hardships that we face throughout our parenting\/mothering journeys. I push the boundaries and tackle topics from the angle of decolonizing motherhood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From obvious pressures like having to “bounce back” after giving birth to the “mom rage” we may feel from time to time, it all ties to the idea that we or our children have to reach particular standards of perfection. These are simply not realistic, and cause us so much grief among other negative emotions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We often don’t think about how it does not have to be this way. It is not on us or our children, but rather the colonial systems in place, which make us feel like we have to fit into a specific box to consider ourselves successful in today’s world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, the podcast also has a significant focus on social justice and human rights, as oppression of marginalized groups results from colonial ideas and actions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As I often say in my episodes, we have the superpower as parents to positively impact our future through how we raise our children.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fun fact: My show is called Vida with Christie because not only is it about aspects of my vida (life in Spanish), and I wanted that bilingual touch, but because my daughter’s name means “life” in Greek. The podcast, like my motherhood journey, is a dedication to her.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcast setup?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n

My podcast setup is quite simple and super user-friendly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have a Blue Yeti microphone, which is the first mic I bought and still use today and Beats Solo 3 Wireless Headphones (which I use wired to avoid any interruptions). I use both for recording and editing on Audacity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When I have guests, I used Zoom until they took away the free unlimited service. Now I’ve switched to Riverside as it allows me to do 2 hours of recording for free per month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I can also edit the video right on the platform which is great! I do this all on a desktop computer (yes, I’m a PC girl!). My website is on WordPress and is hosted by Bluehost.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve been using Bluehost for years and they are excellent, and I’ve been on WordPress since 2010 and have taught myself how to create all kinds of websites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, I host my podcast on Libsyn, which is by far my favorite podcast hosting platform, as they offer a community vibe type of customer service approach and have affordable pricing.<\/span><\/p>\n

For promotions, I use Headliner to create audiograms, and Canva<\/a> or Picmonkey to design promotional content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am a self-funded podcaster, so I try to find free options and use them whenever I can.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus far, I’ve been able to limit my expenses to hosting for the website and podcast, as well as a Picmonkey yearly membership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast & motherhood journey?<\/b><\/h3>\n

As I am a digital marketing strategist by profession, specializing in paid digital advertising, I try to take an organic approach with my podcast and content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So far, my most successful form of promotion and growth has been by being a guest on other podcasts. I am often invited to speak about my subject matter expertise (decolonizing motherhood, breaking intergenerational cycles, social justice education, honest parenting, and raising bi-cultural children) on other podcasts and I enjoy it incredibly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, I also use social media and find that <\/span>Instagram<\/span><\/a> Reels are currently bringing me the most success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Naturally, I also tell people about my podcast when the related topic comes up, as word-of-mouth recommendations are important \u2014 don’t ever underestimate them!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/b><\/h3>\n

When I started back in 2018, I didn’t have the niche topic or theme that I do now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I made the mistake of thinking that I had to tackle all kinds of topics in order to gain listener interest and growth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, in 2020, I went back to the drawing board and approached my podcast from a more international strategic approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I rebranded and relaunched to fall within the niche of my subject matter expertise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, I had significant growth in not only listeners but loyal listeners which I believe to be one of the most important elements of a podcast’s audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I now have listeners from all over the world who relate incredibly to the experiences I share and would like to take steps similar to those I have taken in my motherhood journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
