{"id":12234,"date":"2023-02-14T05:00:17","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T10:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/libsyn.com\/blog\/?p=12234"},"modified":"2023-02-14T12:58:15","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T17:58:15","slug":"4-black-podcasting-history-makers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libsyn.com\/blog\/4-black-podcasting-history-makers\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Black Podcasting Creatives Making Black Podcasting History \u2014 A Love Note"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wanted to write a bit of a love letter to some folks that I&#8217;ve had the blessing to get to know and admire deeply from afar, through podcasting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I was meditating on them, I recognized that they are making history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are making history <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> podcasting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are making <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> history in podcasting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The podcasting industry is relatively young, and there is not much pertaining to historical events chronicled, other than on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_podcasting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wikipedia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Podcasting-Do-Yourself-Todd-Cochrane\/dp\/0764597787\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/1lzlbGi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">books<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with references to notable events, like when the first use of the term &#8220;podcasting&#8221; happened, when the first enclosure tag was added to an RSS feed, and when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/libsyn.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/05\/happy-birthday-libsyn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first podcast hosting company was created<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/paradeim\/a-brief-history-of-podcasting-2e73cfbca7d0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">etc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the historical events of note that I mean \u2014 those subtle inflection points often buoyed by people <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doing the work<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 the industry doesn&#8217;t really <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or put on record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let alone from historically excluded communities &#8211; *cough* hence, the historically excluded part.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s LOVE Day <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black History Month, and this is a love letter to Black podcast creators, the flex point makers, in podcasting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This list is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> biased. It is not meant to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exclusive<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">definitive<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all-encompassing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> super short, personal list of people that I believe are making Black Podcasting History.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This love letter is a call to action for you to write your own &#8220;love letter&#8221; to highlight and amplify Black podcasting leaders and creators that you know are making podcasting history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Quickie shout-out to the Black &amp; Brown Podcast Collective who have published posts on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbpodcollective.com\/post\/moments-in-black-podcasting-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black podcasting history.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Afros and Audio &amp; Talib Jasir<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talib Jasir is so many things: creator, community organizer, life coach, and author; he holds a B.A. in Public Policy and Africana Studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, he is the Founder and CEO of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrosandaudio.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afros &amp; Audio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanguardpn.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanguard Podcast Network.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He came into podcasting in 2017, after creating an audio &#8220;romcom&#8221; drama called\u00a0 &#8220;The Fussings: Until One of Us Is Dead&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His claim to history is creating the first two-day event for Black podcast creators and audio professionals called Afros &amp; Audio Podcast Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He decided to create what he wanted to see after starting to produce his podcast and not finding the resources, information and support that he was looking for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He did it without knowing anything about organizing a two-day conference, only a clear vision of what he wanted to create and a group of early supporters pushing him forward. He went all in and 5 years later &#8212; the rest is history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first Afros &amp; Audio conference took place on June 22 and 23, 2019 in Brooklyn, NY. His dream was that this event be led by the podcast creators and professionals that are stakeholders in their own success and others in the podcast industry and stems from his mission and commitment to &#8220;community and collaboration&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the key components of Afros &amp; Audio is strengthening the connective tissue of Black podcast creators and audio professionals to make sure &#8220;that we know each other exists.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ability for Black creators to find each other, to connect, to educate, and collaborate drives what Afros &amp; Audio is all about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conference looks to break the barriers that historically excluded voices often come up against \u2014 lack of access, education, and information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Black Podcasters Association &amp; Corey Gumbs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then comes Corey Gumbs! He&#8217;s an audio engineer and oh so many other things, primarily centered around work in audio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corey also stepped into podcasting and immediately joined a bunch of podcasting groups to get to know the what&#8217;s what. Although he participated in many groups, he recognized that they weren&#8217;t quite serving the type of information, communication, and connection that he was looking for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He saw a divide between the information that was being shared in these groups and the reality of what it would <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> take for a Black podcaster to not only podcast, but to up-level their existing podcasts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And so in March 2020, he created the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blackpodcastersassociation.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Podcaster Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a Facebook Group. Since then, the BPA has become so much more.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/blackpodcastersassociation.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our mission is to bring together a diverse group of black podcast creatives and professionals who are committed to reshaping the podcasting landscape while striving to create a foundation that fully supports our creative voices, respects our brands, and celebrates our unique voices.<\/span><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wanted a safe and supportive space where Black podcasters could find each other and help each other build better podcasts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corey is always fighting the good fight for the best quality of all things audio production and creation, empowering Black podcasters to have access to that information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His dream, to have The Black Podcasters Association be &#8220;the premiere place for Black creatives and Black professionals within the podcast space for the industry.&#8221; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One place<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where podcasters can find community and top-notch education. He wants the BPA to take away all the things that are taking away from Black creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Podcasters Association partnered with Afros &amp; Audio! History. Made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two brilliant organizations with similar visions providing even more together for Black creators and audio professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community, education, and conference!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Danielle Desir Corbett \u2014 The Thought Card, WOC Podcasters, Grants For Creators<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s 2015 and Danielle begins her journey into chronicling travel and finance with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtcard.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Thought Card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blog after planning a trip to Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle didn&#8217;t get caught up on whether she should focus on just travel or just finance. She found that in doing both, her audience resonated with it \u2014 and it also provided an outlet for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating the type of content that she was looking for that she hadn&#8217;t been able to find \u2014 how to pay off student loan debt while traveling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But man, oh man, she did not stop there! Here&#8217;s a bullet list of Black podcasting history-making:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle applies to Spotify&#8217;s SoundUp in March 2018.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@iamliberty\/over-18-000-women-of-color-apply-for-spotifys-sound-up-bootcamp-a-wake-up-call-for-brands-or-c95cb3e8aa6b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotify delays its planned announcement of the cohort and it causes chaos!<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lots of the women that applied are on social media looking for information and wanting to communicate with Spotify and each other.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle builds a WOC Twitter list centering the folks that applied using the hashtag #SoundUpBootCamp and creates the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wocpodcasters.co\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WOC Podcasters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Facebook Group.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She did all of that out of instinct and not fully knowing what she was getting herself into, but recognizing that this might be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">big <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 even though she didn&#8217;t even have a podcast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And using the momentum of Spotify&#8217;s SoundUp and WOC Podcasters, she finally launched The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/15GalA8XWun1Fhi8gQTpbl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thought Card podcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in September 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever since Danielle has tried almost every possible way to monetize. She has multi-faceted insight into what it takes to build brands, businesses, and true diversification of income \u2014 from successful, personal experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything that Danielle has done and continues to create comes from an organic, natural, instinctual, and experimental leadership style. She leads from a place of wanting to know how to engage and grow <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">together.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January 2022, she launched the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thethoughtcard\/status\/1486050741185912832\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Grants For Creators<\/em> newsletter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in January 2023, her second podcast,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/2XiXvQWkFAKCngghpD48PS?si=b298ace204c84ec2\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women of Color Podcasters.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Anna DeShawn \u2014 E3 Radio, The Qube<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna DeShawn&#8217;s path to Black podcasting history-making comes with creating her own radio show in November 2009 and building E3 Radio, an online radio station playing queer &amp; independent music in high rotation: &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/e3radio.fm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E3 is Queer Radio Done Right.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever since, Anna has had a clear and single-minded mission: to bring more awareness and visibility to the voices of Black, Brown, queer, and trans People of Color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That mission expanded from E3 Radio to their annual event, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/e3radio.fm\/the-purple-tie-affair\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purple Tie Affair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a concert, and silent auction benefiting Anna&#8217;s favorite non-profits, and then finally the pi\u00e8ce de r\u00e9sistance, the development and creation of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theqube.app\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Qube App<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna recognized that consumption of audio, plus the ability to find music and podcasts centering Black, Brown, queer, and trans People of Color all in one place, was an often-voiced pain point in her community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theqube.app\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Qube App<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She quit her full-time job and became a full-time entrepreneur in February 2021 to devote herself to building a curated destination for the best podcasts &amp; music by BIPOC creators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She continues to inspire and inform her community by forging meaningful partnerships with other podcasting organizations and thought leaders who authentically align with her vision, in addition to her weekly podcast<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/annadeshawn.com\/onair\/anna-deshawn-on-tiktok\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queer News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna sees the world through collaboration, not competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She&#8217;s moving Black podcasters forward, all day, every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Keep Your Own Black Podcasting History<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am not Black.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am El Salvadorean. I hold a small piece of podcasting history as the first woman and Latina inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. I need to do a better job of building my own historical archives, gathering records, artifacts, preserving the past, and claiming my place in podcasting history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As do, I believe, most other BIPOC podcasting creators and professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a podcasting community, especially for historically excluded people and voices, we need to keep the records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write it down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Publish it.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Make it searchable. And let\u2019s all share it.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Podcasting is thriving. Black podcasting pioneers are present and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> present. Black podcasters <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worldwide<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been shaping the podcasting industry since its inception.
