In our Podcasting Luminary Series, we share the voices of podcasters that have been podcasting for 5 or more years and have them impart some of their best podcasting wisdom grounded in experience.<\/em><\/p>\n

This week\u2019s Podcasting Luminary is the ever vibrant-bursting-with-personality Heather Ordover from Craftlit<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Heather started podcasting in April 2006, exactly two states and two family moves ago.<\/em><\/p>\n

Heather\u2019s insight offered so much actionable advice on how to make a podcast that we decided to split her interview into two! Fun, Fame or Profit? Why are you doing the show?<\/h3>\n

I love books and I love being read to. It was as simple as that in the beginning. Once I got started and saw how many others liked what I liked I knew I\u2019d found my niche.<\/p>\n

I know a lot of \u2019casts that started at the same time as CraftLit and are long-gone, but I can\u2019t stop. I certainly can\u2019t stop mid-book and then by the time we\u2019re finishing up one book I\u2019ve gotten jazzed about another, so I\u2019m always somewhere in the cycle.<\/p>\n

CraftLit will go on until I drop.<\/p>\n

What is your most memorable feedback from a listener?<\/h3>\n

A mother wrote me years ago, right after we finished The Mysterious Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde<\/a> to tell me that her daughter, who is on the\u00a0Asperger\u2019s\u00a0end of the spectrum, was supposed to write a paper on the same story and the paper had to focus on emotional elements in the characters.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s nigh-on impossible for an Asperger student to pick up on, but her daughter listened to the podcast a few times, wrote her paper, got an A, and graduated on time. I can\u2019t think of a moment when I\u2019ve been more proud of what we do.<\/p>\n

On a more personal note, I just received a quilt<\/a> from my listeners as a thank you for the first 300.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a queen-sized knit and crochet quilt and I will not let it out of my possession.<\/p>\n

Ever.<\/p>\n

Not for a second.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the most wonderful gift, ever.<\/p>\n

What has changed the most in your recording setup since you started?<\/h3>\n

\"Craftlit<\/a>I\u2019m better at post-production, now.<\/p>\n

In the beginning I thought it was more important to get a podcast out \u201con time\u201d or on an expected schedule than it was to have perfect audio.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve learned (mostly by listening to other podcasts) just how much good audio matters in the delivery of content.<\/p>\n

Use a mic, people.<\/p>\n

And edit.<\/p>\n

Ask me how I know.<\/p>\n

What tools on Libsyn have you found most helpful in building your brand\/podcast?<\/h3>\n

Lately, Libsyn has provided a number of tools that I\u2019ve found invaluable. I now have more computer support (via Pennywise Consulting<\/a>) but when it was just me it seemed the hourly drain of getting a \u2019cast out just kept increasing with each new wrinkle in social media.<\/p>\n

Now that I can automagically post to Twitter and FB and WordPress my life has become my own again.<\/p>\n

Without Libsyn I wouldn\u2019t be able to focus on content as much as I can now.<\/p>\n

Have you found that social media has expanded your listener base\/reach? (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Google+, etc)<\/h3>\n

No one finds Craftlit serendipitously and no one has ever reported finding us via social media.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been 100% word of mouth. Because\u2014 seriously\u2014who Googles, \u201cknitting literature podcast\u201d or \u201clisten to classics for free\u201d.<\/p>\n

No one.<\/p>\n

When it comes to niche marketing I\u2019m caught in the threads of the Interwebs. But the folks who come to me by word of mouth stay.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t argue with that. And I love my listeners. They\u2019re just better.<\/p>\n

For me social media is just a fast way to communicate with my people. Nothing more.<\/p>\n

What is your workflow: include hardware, software, text editing, and services as necessary<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve settled into a new flow for this school year (all bets are off during the summer):<\/p>\n
