Q & A with Jon Buscall from the Online Marketing & Communications Podcast<\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I put my first episode out in April 2010.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I\u2019d been listening to shows about marketing, which is the field I work in, by Mitch Joel, Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz.<\/p>\n

I loved the way I felt connected to them through the sound of the ear buds in my ears.<\/p>\n

It was like listening to a great conversation in my own little world.<\/p>\n

So I quickly started investigating what was out there. Before I switched careers I worked as a university lecturer so I was used to doing a lot of presenting and training.<\/p>\n

Starting a podcast about the work I was doing seemed like a great way to generate new leads, reach a new audience.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

Digital marketing for small to medium sized businesses<\/a>. The emphasis is on giving business owners an insight into what their marketing team could and should be doing.<\/p>\n

Of course, it\u2019s also targeted at solo entrepreneurs bootstrapping their marketing.<\/p>\n

Shows are a combination of solo shows and interviews. I try to talk to people doing real world marketing and not the usual suspects that do the rounds.<\/p>\n

I want to give listeners an insight into what people around the world are doing.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

I have a Heil PR 40 mic hooked up to a DBX 286 mic preamp processor, which in turn feeds into a Soundcraft EPM 8 mixer.<\/p>\n

I bring in music and Skype interviews into the mixer through my iMac and record the show on a Zoom H4N.<\/p>\n

I then edit the show in AdobeAudition.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

My website jontusmedia.com<\/a> is where I primarily promote my show.<\/p>\n

I have a separate category for the show as I decided I didn\u2019t want it to be separate from my business and put it on its own domain. So the show gets discovered by people coming through to the site.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m also active on Twitter and Facebook, which in turn brings in listeners.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

I wish I\u2019d known how important a good mic-preamp is.<\/p>\n

I added the DBX to my set-up about ten episodes ago and it\u2019s beefed up the sound that bit extra.<\/p>\n

I am quite an audio snob who wants great sound. The mic preamp really helped me get to where I want to be in terms of sound for the time being.<\/p>\n
