Q & A with Craig Price from The Reality Check Podcast<\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I started podcasting in February of 2011.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

Without getting gruesome, I had gum surgery in January of 2011 and was told I couldn\u2019t talk for 6 weeks. As a person who makes his living by having others pay him to stand in front of people, it was both very scary and very frustrating.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t call clients, talk to my wife (she was surprisingly ok with that) or really do much but putter around the house. So I downloaded some podcasts to listen to, something to occupy my time.<\/p>\n

I thought the format was perfect for me and started to think about what I would do with a podcast.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a generalist. I know a little about a lot of things that leads many people to assume I know a lot about all the subjects I comment on. I\u2019m not a person that will just BS his way through an answer so when people started asking social media questions just because I was \u201con the BookFace\u201d and on \u201cTweeter\u201d I decided instead of answering with my limited knowledge, I would have a true expert answer the question.<\/p>\n

My network is full of speakers and experts so I knew I had a well to draw from and thus a podcast was created.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

The Reality Check Podcast<\/a> is a pretty diverse eclectic medium-length (30 min or so) interview show that covers topics from Orangutan Rescue to being an FBI agent, business experts and movie previews.<\/p>\n

The one thing that is constant is that the interview is pretty open. I don\u2019t want it to be an infomercial, I want to get past the bumper sticker statements, get to the reality of a topic and dispel myths (good or bad) people often assume.<\/p>\n

I tell folks it\u2019s like a newspaper (remember those?) where everyone knows what the headline stories are, but I prefer going to page 13 and finding the story that I never thought I\u2019d read about.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

I use my dell laptop, an old copy of adobe audition (V1.5) because I am familiar with it and already owned a copy. I bought an Alesis Multimix 6 USB mixer to plug my PG58 mic that I\u2019ve had since my stand-up days into.<\/p>\n

But since I travel so much for my job and meet so many cool people on the road, I bought an h4n Zoom for road interviews. I recently just bought a Samson MDR1064 10 channel mixer to record more than 3 people (my max until recently) so I can do more roundtable-ish discussions and podcasts.<\/p>\n

The laptop and H4N allow me to edit podcasts on the road. I bought my intro music from premuimbeats.com and I use Mailchimp to send out weekly newsletters to my listeners.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

I use the usual suspects but since my guests are different each week I can piggy back on their people so I really depend on the guest to promote their appearance.<\/p>\n

The ones with a good base get larger numbers. Marketing and promotion are my weak spots but I try not to focus on numbers and just publish content I\u2019m proud of.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

I wish I had gotten the h4n from day one. It would have made getting through airport security so much easier.<\/p>\n

I look pretty swarthy and having a bag full of wires and a box (the mixer) sure make the TSA agent in charge of the X-ray machine nervous.<\/p>\n

I usually get pulled over for a \u201crandom search\u201d every time I have my mixer with me. Now I travel with the H4n, it fits in my travel bag and made life so much easier.<\/p>\n
