Q & A with Ben, Tony and Ryan from Drink\u2019n Think\u2019n<\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

We recorded our first two episodes in the winter of 2009. We then graduated college, found ourselves busy with life, and didn\u2019t record another episode until the summer of 2012. We\u2019ve been releasing episodes on a regular basis since.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

Our first episode was recorded on a whim. I was taking an audio production course at the time so I had a mic and a MiniDisc recorder (yes, that\u2019s right, MiniDisc) in my bag.<\/p>\n

We had just gotten back from our local brew pub and thought it would be funny to bust out the recording gear and tape our mildly intoxicated conversations. We recorded only one other episode before going on a three year hiatus.<\/p>\n

In May of 2012 we decided to relive our college glory days and record the long overdue Episode 3 of Drink\u2019n Think\u2019n. A year later, we\u2019re taking the show pretty seriously but in all honesty, at the end of the day we use the podcast as an excuse for three college buddies to get together in the same room, share a beer, and try to make each other laugh.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

Drink\u2019n Think\u2019n<\/a> is a celebration of craft beer, pop culture, and goof ball humor. Every episode features a \u201cBrew Review\u201d segment where we review a new craft beer that we haven\u2019t tried yet. We also talk about movies that we\u2019ve recently seen, 90\u2019s sitcoms, and sometimes we even breakout in to song and dance although the dance part doesn\u2019t really play well on a podcast.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

We record the show using a Zoom H4n and two Shure SM58\u2019s. I then edit the show using Adobe Audition. Because the H4n has a somewhat noisy preamp, I start my editing with a noise reduction on the two tracks recorded with SM58\u2019s.<\/p>\n

I then run a \u201cFavorite\u201d that I created that applies normalization, compression, and EQ to each track. Next, if need be, I match the levels of each track and then bounce them to a single track. Finally I add the show music and edit out any awkward pauses.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

Aside from using various social media platforms, we have also had luck posting our episodes on Reddit in a few subreddits that relate to the show.<\/p>\n

We also like to visit local breweries and brew festival and spread the word the old fashion way.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

Audio quality is key. No matter how good the content is, nobody wants to sit through an hour plus show that is full of noise, echo, etc.<\/p>\n

Unless you\u2019re a night owl, recording too late in the evening will make for a rushed, yawn filled discussion which is never any fun.<\/p>\n

If you like to enjoy an adult beverage while recording like we do, make sure to also drink plenty of water at the same time. Your vocal chords will thank you later.<\/p>\n
