Q & A with Yolande from the Talking Heels Podcast<\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

Officially, we started in October 2012 but the idea had been sizzling beneath the surface for about 4 years prior.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

My cousin, Aldith, and I are always getting into long tirades about art, music, films and pop culture, so we decided to let others in on the fun.<\/p>\n

Sam joined the team to balance and bring meditative wisdom between the polar opposite prim, proper, optimist (Aldith) and the geeky, judgmental, realist (me).<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

The Talking Heels<\/a> are three, well-traveled, Caribbean women (all with fine arts backgrounds) debating life, love, and how much to assimilate into American culture over food and cocktails.<\/p>\n

We all have large families and fascinating friends, so people are constantly stopping by to add a little more spice to the conversation.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

We are super-low fidelity at this point but planning to upgrade once we hit episode 85. Yeah goals!<\/p>\n

Right now, we record using a \u201cYeti USB Microphone\u201d \u00a0and record\/edit in GarageBand, Tag with ID3 Editor, and upload to a WordPress site using the PowerPress Plugin.<\/p>\n

It works for now because who has time to mess with cords\/gadgets while juggling a plate of akee, salt-fish, yam & dumplings. :o)<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

Mostly, word of mouth. \u00a0We attend numerous art and music events in Atlanta, GA and promote the podcast while there. We recently started producing Facebook\/Twitter commentary consistently, so those connections are still forming.<\/p>\n

Right now, our philosophy is to split the promotion between the hosts. \u00a0Aldith loves shopping, funny\/provocative celebrity gossip, and minority arts, so people engaging with us on Facebook will enjoy those types of stories.<\/p>\n

Sam is spreading spiritual questions over the twitter airwaves, while I handle getting the show out through the more traditional marketing channels (banner\/graphic content, contributing to other blogs\/etc. I tend to prefer a glass wall with my engagement (\u2026only half-kidding).<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

I wish I realized how important it is to find the podcasting community in your area. Even though I try to listen to everything I can, there are not enough hours in my day. \u00a0Nothing is more powerful than the opportunity to bounce ideas\/practices off like minded people face-to-face.<\/p>\n

The \u201cBrown Sands Yoga\u201d \u00a0and \u201cMiniHeels Cooking\u201d\u00a0premium\u00a0content segments\u00a0will be a part of the podcast app launch (expected late-December).<\/em>
\n Sam is an ex-yoga instructor and she will be leading \u201cBrown Sands,\u201d\u00a0which are quick videos full of techniques people can use to calm. center, and focus on themselves despite their crazy, hectic lives. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMiniHeels Cooking\u201d will be a video series where Aldith\u2019s two young girls, Remi & Raven, attempt to cook the dishes they enjoy during their podcast recording.<\/em><\/p>\n

They plan to start monthly sessions in January 2014 and will feature easy to follow recipes but always with an island twist.<\/em><\/p>\n
