Q & A with Mark Dowding from Oh Beep! A Geocaching Podcast<\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

We started podcasting in October 2013.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

It was something I\u2019d been considering doing for a long time. \u00a0I was fascinated by it all. \u00a0Our show is about Geocaching and I listen to all of the English language podcasts relating to Geocaching.<\/p>\n

One of these podcasts is GeoGearHeads, by DarrylW4 and The Bad Cop. Rob Walch was a guest on their show about The History of Podcasting.<\/p>\n

That was the tipping point.<\/p>\n

I got the kids\u00a0involved because I thought it would be interesting for them, also because children aren\u2019t represented enough on podcasts about Geocaching. \u00a0The kids are really the main hosts, I just \u201cguide\u201d them.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

Our show Oh Beep!<\/a> is about Geocaching – the obsession where people use million dollar\u00a0satellites to find tupperware in the woods. \u00a0Its a weekly show, released on Sundays.<\/p>\n

Its a very light hearted show, we like to have a laugh.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

We started off with a very cheap, non-branded, USB mic plugged in to a laptop. \u00a0I did the usual thing of trying to do it on the cheap.<\/p>\n

That was a mistake.<\/p>\n

On our first couple of shows, you can hardly hear Sophie. \u00a0That lasted for 4\u00a0episodes – actually, for two of the four, I\u2019d not turned the mic on so we were using the laptops mic (I made ALL the\u00a0rookie errors).<\/p>\n

With\u00a0the help of DarrylW4 and a bit more research, I upgraded to a\u00a0Behringer Xenyx x1204 mixer and Behringer XM8500 mics.<\/p>\n

We were initially recording straight in to Audacity. \u00a0Recently we\u2019ve upgraded with a Zoom H4n for recording on to. \u00a0Its also enables us to record while out and about. \u00a0The kids love the roving reporter feel of it.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

DarrylW4 has been a great help in promoting us, just one mention from him on Google+ got us on the front page of Google search.<\/p>\n

We also had great help and support from Hikerjamz, who does another geocaching related podcast. \u00a0He interviewed us on his show and gives us a mention now and again.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve also had Darryl and James on our show, that convinced me that we needed to do at least one interview a month. \u00a0Those interviews add a great dimension to the podcast.<\/p>\n

I try to promote as much as possible via Twitter<\/a>, Facebook<\/a> and Google+<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Its\u00a0been a steep learning curve. I don\u2019t want to be sell, sell, sell.<\/p>\n

Its far more rewarding and interesting when you get to know people and can have a conversation with them – I\u2019d like to think those relationships last even if we\u00a0pod fade.<\/p>\n

We also have our own website,\u00a0which gives people a hub to grab our content and connect to our social networks.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

I wish I\u2019d taken my time.<\/p>\n

Learned the ropes.<\/p>\n

I was too rushed and inpatient to record and release. I\u2019d gone down the \u201cfree\u201d route and it cost us in the long run.<\/p>\n

We\u00a0didn\u2019t have control of our feed, our audio sounded terrible. \u00a0But, had we not started so quickly we might have still been planning.<\/p>\n
