Q & A with Steph from Hearts and Laserbeams<\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I started recording podcast episodes while I was on maternity leave with my baby girl Joy this spring.<\/p>\n

I launched the podcast upon my return to the office in May of 2014.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m always looking for ways to expand my reach so more people will find out about my design and illustration services.<\/p>\n

Podcasting sounded like a lot of fun! It\u2019s a great vehicle for my ridiculous sense of humor, and I think it gives people an idea of what my personality\u2019s all about before they work with me.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

Hearts and Laserbeams<\/a> is whatever I wanna talk about, whenever I wanna talk about it. I\u2019ve got funny episodes about weird dreams I\u2019ve had, serious ones about running a small business, and a great one where I interviewed my 3 year old son Phil about a monster truck show he went to recently.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

Oh I am all about quick and dirty here.<\/p>\n

My whole goal with podcasting is not to spend hours editing. Get in, get out, have a good time doing it, and get back to work.<\/p>\n

I use my iPhone microphone (gasp!!) and my webcam software to record the audio (double gasp!!!).<\/p>\n

The sound quality isn\u2019t the top of the pops, but it gets the job done in the shoot from the hip quick style I\u2019m going for.<\/p>\n

I also record my own intro music for every episode. I record the whole thing in one take and push that baby live.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve got a pretty good social media reach, so I post about new episodes across those networks: Twitter<\/a>, Facebook<\/a>, Instagram<\/a> and more!<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve also got a newsletter for my design business, and I\u2019ll mention new episodes in that as well. Plus I\u2019ve listed it in a bunch of different podcast directories.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

It doesn\u2019t have to be as intimidating as it sounds! It\u2019s like karaoke – your show may not be the best one out there, but you\u2019re still doing way better than the people who think about doing a show but never actually do it.<\/p>\n
