Q & A with Scott from Assembly of Geeks<\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I launched my first podcast (The Critic Show) back in 2011.<\/p>\n

I had produced content for radio, but it was my first venture into podcasting & hosting a show.<\/p>\n

I wanted it to be a listener-driven opinion show centered primarily around movies & TV. \u00a0I also hoped to get a celebrity guest on occasion, if possible.<\/p>\n

Eventually two things happened\u2026I learned my concept was flawed for several reasons (including too broad of a theme) and I started to get guests on every show (by the way, a new show aired twice a month).<\/p>\n

As each month passed, I made improvements to the show, including adding more voices & creative segments. I\u2019ve heard podcast experts talk about how you may want to produce your first few shows but not post them.<\/p>\n

Instead, post show #10 or so, because in all likelihood, a lot is going to change. \u00a0That was true for me. \u00a0By my 7th episode, it was a whole different show.<\/p>\n

Later, I went back and deleted my first 6 episodes because they were so different from Episode 7 and on.<\/p>\n

In 2012, I realized The Critic Show was not a good name anymore and my program had become a movies\/TV discussion and interview show. \u00a0So, I renamed it Beyond the Screens.
\nI still managed to get plenty of guests, but continued to experiment a lot with segments and felt I needed to narrow the focus even more. \u00a0I noticed many of my guests and topics were geek related, so I ended Beyond the Screens and launched Assembly of Geeks in September of 2013.<\/p>\n

I knew there were a lot of geek talk shows out there and I wanted to do something that would make my show stand out. \u00a0So, I had this creative vision of the hosts, listeners and guests all converging on a Hall of Justice-like fortress to discuss what\u2019s happening in the geek world.<\/p>\n

I then thought if I went that route\u2026I needed to take the Hall of Justice inspiration even further\u2026like have a narrator start the show and have some sort of action or story play out as each episode began.<\/p>\n

I then thought it would be fun to have a fictional character get involved in the action and discussion. \u00a0So, I created GANNIN – The Geek and Nerd News And Intel Network – he\u2019s like Jarvis from Iron Man.<\/p>\n

Unlike The Critic Show\/Beyond the Screens, little has changed about AoG since it\u2019s launch. It\u2019s going strong and we just added a podcast dedicated to the TV series, Agent Carter (complete with 1940\u2019s music and radio spots).<\/p>\n

The older podcasts are no longer around, but my interviews are found here.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

In 2011, I was job searching and needed a creative outlet. My wife suggested I create a podcast. I was really good at producing content for radio, so it made a lot of sense to give it a go.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

We discuss all things geek – movies, TV shows, comics, cosplay, rumors, nostalgia, etc.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

I use a $70 mic I found at Target – it\u2019s the Samson Q2U USB mic.<\/p>\n

I record the show with 2 other hosts via Skype and Evaer. \u00a0I edit on Audacity and Sony Sound Forge. \u00a0Here I am explaining it all in a video:<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

Facebook, Twitter, promos, being on other podcasts, blogs, getting links on sites<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/p>\n

Probably the rule listed above about producing a few shows before you post the first one.<\/p>\n
