Q & A with Al from What\u2019s Up On Earth<\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I started podcasting in June 2014 with the original fan podcast for the TNT drama \u201cThe Last Ship\u201d.<\/p>\n

After the first season of that show ended, I was enjoying podcasting so much I started \u201cWhat\u2019s Up On Earth?\u201d<\/a>, a weekly round up of sports and entertainment information with a bit of opinion added.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I did some on-air radio in college, and in listening to podcasts, I realized it might be a fun challenge to try, and also a great way to learn something new.<\/p>\n

I had been doing a bit of blogging, but never really enjoyed it that much\u2013podcasting is far more fun.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

What\u2019s Up On Earth? covers the week in movies, TV, professional and college sports, and online videos.<\/p>\n

I help get you and keep you caught up on the week in sports and entertainment, so you\u2019ll never feel completely out of touch.\u00a0 I also add in my opinion when it seems to be needed, and include a special feature each week.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

I use a Blue Snowball Ice microphone, and record directly into my laptop using Audacity.<\/p>\n

I add music using an older version of Pinnacle Studio, and publish the libsyn link and the show notes to the podcast feed on my WordPress website.<\/p>\n

I use both Pond5 and iStockPhoto for music and stock photos.<\/p>\n

I have tried to get the show into all the major directories\u2013iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn, PocketCast, Zune, Podkicker, doubleTwist.<\/p>\n

I know some prefer to have the show in only iTunes, but I want to be sure to catch the Android and Windows Phone users also.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

Most of the promotion I have done is over social media\u2013Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, Instagram, and Google+.<\/p>\n

I have also printed business cards and handed them out to friends and neighbors, and posted a \u201chow to listen\u201d video with my branding on YouTube.<\/p>\n

I have recently started doing three or four 15-second videos each week with tidbits of content from the latest episode and cross posting them on Instagram and Twitter.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

I wish I had realized how routine the process would become once you do it regularly.\u00a0 In reading how to publish a podcast, it seemed very complex and cumbersome.\u00a0 In reality, it is fairly straight forward.<\/p>\n

Show prep does take some time for both of my podcasts\u2013however, because both of them are related to current events, most of the content is there, I just need to gather it into the format I use for recording and show notes.<\/p>\n

Only two dozen episodes published between the two shows and all aspects of the process have become smoother and quicker, and I expect that will continue as time goes on.<\/p>\n
