Q & A\u2019s with Raymond from the Shadow Of Ideas Podcast<\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I originally began podcasting in October of 2004 at my college radio station, WUOG 90.5FM in Athens, GA.<\/p>\n

We were attempting to work out a traditional syndication scheme for some of our programs, and a few of the more tech-savvy members of the staff turned me onto podcasting.<\/p>\n

Within just a few weeks, I had a much larger audience for my show online than I did at the station.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

See above for my initial motives.<\/p>\n

As for my current series, The Shadow of Ideas, I started because I looked around and felt a sense that people were generally uninformed about the historical context of most current politics and culture.<\/p>\n

Things don\u2019t just happen in a bubble.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

The Shadow of Ideas<\/a> explores the world of current events, social justice, and politics through the lens of history.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a podcast about context, and about how concepts from the past form the narratives that we use to understand the present and the future.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

I use an inexpensive ACER laptop (AMD) with a dedicated GPU, a Blue Yeti mic (no xlr on mine), M-Audio AV\u201340 desk monitors, MX Skype Recorder (dual channel mode simplifies editing greatly), and Adobe Audition for editing.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

Since we started the show two months ago, my wonderful producer Jeff has really been running the full gambit.<\/p>\n

Facebook, Twitter, iTunes store, and every podcast directory we could find.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also taking the lead on the premium app that we have in development with you guys at Libsyn.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been doing some guest appearances on other podcasts (Coincidence\u00a0Control Network, Project Archivist), and doing my best to build up a connection with the audience.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

How the Hard Limiting process works.<\/p>\n

Not to ramble on too much at the beginning and end of episodes.<\/p>\n

How iTunes SEO works.<\/p>\n

I wish I had been more concerned with how long the production process was taking, and taken steps to shorten the amount of time it takes to get an episodes out.<\/p>\n

Obviously, you can\u2019t skip the editing, but you can do things like recording the entire episode (intro segment, guest interview, outro segment) all in the same take, as opposed to coming back days later to record stuff that you then assemble together.<\/p>\n
