When did I start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I got the idea in the summer of 2015.<\/p>\n

I recorded a couple of shows but procrastinated.<\/p>\n

The first shows were awful.<\/p>\n

Then some of the shows got out of date. Decided to release first episodes after the election with the hope that the show would \u201ctake off\u201d so to speak early in 2017 when people are looking to improve themselves.<\/p>\n

Why did I start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

Three reasons:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. I was tired of worthy charities suffering because they couldn\u2019t raise enough funds. I wanted help them raise more funds and diversify their fundraising.<\/li>\n
  2. I wanted to diversify my skills by meeting experts in different parts of fundraising and advertising.<\/li>\n
  3. I wanted to give back to the field which has given so much to me.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

    The Doctor Donor Show<\/a> is about fundraising. That’s the simple answer, but it\u2019s about how to get attention and how to get people to take action on behalf of your cause.<\/p>\n

    What\u2019s your podcasting set-up?<\/h3>\n

    I use a H4N recorder for local interviews.<\/p>\n

    For out of area interviews I use freeconferencing. Podcast Factory mixes them up and gives technical assistance.<\/p>\n

    How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

    I use mostly a guest format. This enables me to use the guest\u2019s list of friends and family for promotions, as well as my own.<\/p>\n

    I\u2019ve bought ads on Facebook too. For the next show with a guy who has a 25K+ Twitter following, I\u2019m offering Amazon gift cards at random to two people who sign up.<\/p>\n

    You have to be persistent. A friend in the business really liked the show but it took several reminders to even try it.<\/p>\n

    What do I wish I knew when I started?<\/h3>\n

    It takes a lot of preparation.<\/p>\n

    For the David Ogilvy episode I watched two hour long YouTube videos and re-read two of his books. It required at least 5 or 6 hours.<\/p>\n

    Even interview shows require a fair amount of work if I don\u2019t know the guest well. It\u2019s not something you can just \u201cwing.\u201d<\/p>\n

    You need to find your voice and be entertaining. It\u2019s important to get guests who have personality. It\u2019s interesting the degree to which people \u201cclam up\u201d when being recorded.<\/p>\n
