When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I started podcasting in February 2013.<\/p>\n

I first heard about and listened to podcasts in late 2011\/early 2012.<\/p>\n

I started learning how to start a podcast in December 2012 by listening to a couple podcasts about podcasting (shout out to Dave Jackson, Daniel J. Lewis, and Cliff Ravenscraft).<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I started podcasting for two main reasons.<\/p>\n

First of all, I had been blogging and wanted to add the extra dimension of audio to my content.<\/p>\n

Secondly, I was helping people with developing their websites and part of the process was helping them come up with ways to add continuous content on a regular basis.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

The Creative Studio podcast helps to conduct experiments with podcasting.<\/p>\n

I started this particular podcast in July 2015 to help people with general online content creation. I was going really broad, covering blogging, websites, video, podcasting, and social media.<\/p>\n

I also started with a seasonal format. Season 1 was a very broad sweep of content.<\/p>\n

Season 2 narrowed down to websites and blogging.<\/p>\n

Season 3 covered how to podcast.<\/p>\n

Season 4 covers how to create a narrative or NPR style podcast. Season 5 is yet to be determined!<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

For a microphone I have both the Audio Technica ATR2100 USB microphone and a Heil PR\u201340 that I go between.<\/p>\n

With the ATR2100, I use it both with a mixer and directly into my computer, depending on my circumstance.<\/p>\n

I have two different mixers that I\u2019ve gone back and forth on: a Behringer Xenox 302 USB and a Behringer Xenox Q802 USB.<\/p>\n

I use the 802 if I need more than one microphone.<\/p>\n

From the mixer, I go to my computer through the USB cable.<\/p>\n

I will also sometimes use my Zoom H4nPro digital recorder, and this is becoming a more regular process.<\/p>\n

When recording Skype calls, I use software called Amolto.<\/p>\n

I use Adobe Audition for solo shows and for editing. For my personal shows, I don\u2019t do a lot of editing; but when I edit for clients, the editing level will vary from light editing up to cutting all of the ums, ahs, and other stumbles to make it sound professional.<\/p>\n

I will export the mp3 through Audition either at 64kbps Mono or 128kbps Stereo.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m not very good with promotion!<\/p>\n

I send some tweets and a post on Facebook and Linkedin.<\/p>\n

If I have a guest, I\u2019ll share the links with them and tag them with their social media handle.<\/p>\n

I actually struggle with sharing my content in fear of being viewed as too self-promotional, especially in podcasting groups (which would be my target audience) because self-promotion is usually not allowed in those groups.<\/p>\n

I have been able to share my podcast as a guest on a couple other podcasts, and I\u2019ve had a couple connections as a result.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

There are several things that I would have known when I started my first podcast.<\/p>\n

To name just a couple, I wish I knew WHO I was trying to speak to, WHAT their pain points were, and HOW I could help them through the podcast.<\/p>\n

I never really nailed that down, and I fluctuated a lot in the type of content. When I didn\u2019t see the results I hoped for, I started to let the consistency drop. I made some changes after almost 70 episodes, including the name of the podcast.<\/p>\n

Another reason I wish I thought this through more is that the podcast had no real connect with the side business I was trying to build. Even though I enjoyed creating and content and interviewing, my attention was split between building multiple platforms.<\/p>\n
