It wasn\u2019t easy news, and it still isn\u2019t easy to hear when it happens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the result has been more accurate, trusted podcast download stats\u2014the same standard advertisers and networks rely on today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The info below breaks down why the changes happened and what to expect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Are Podcast Download Stats?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Podcast download stats measure the number of valid downloads your podcast episodes receive across listening apps and platforms. Rather than counting every server request, modern podcast analytics follow industry standards developed by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) to filter invalid traffic such as bots, duplicate requests, and repeated download attempts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, podcast download stats provide a more accurate picture of audience activity than raw server requests alone. While download numbers don\u2019t represent the exact number of individual listeners, they remain the industry-standard metric for measuring podcast performance, comparing audience growth, and reporting results to advertisers and partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Your Podcast Download Stats Changed<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u27a9 <\/span><b><i>We want to be 100% IAB-Compliant<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, let\u2019s define IAB aka The Interactive Advertising Bureau.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s comprised of more than 650 leading media and tech companies responsible for selling, delivering and optimizing digital advertising or marketing campaigns<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They account for 86% of online advertising in the U.S.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They develop tech standards and best practices and field critical research on interactive advertising<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They drive education to brands, agencies and business communities about the importance of digital marketing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iab.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HERE for more direct information on the IAB<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why is \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compliance\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so important?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IAB in collaboration with podcast companies (like Libsyn!) and influencers in the podcasting industry developed the \u201cIAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines.\u201d These guidelines were created to provide clarity in defining standard metrics in podcast content and podcast ads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, these standards were created so that if you use podcast company A, B or C, they will all measure your downloads in the same way\u2014reducing discrepancies that we sometimes see across podcast publishers and tech vendors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to this moment, there hasn\u2019t been any regulation or uniform measurement protocol, which muddied the waters for publishers, tech vendors and marketers, especially when looking to establish trusting relationships with advertisers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being compliant with the IAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines is of utmost importance\u2014as Steve Mulder, senior director of audience insights at NPR and co-chair of the IAB Podcast Technical Working Group said \u201cWhen we have an industry standard, it lends credibility to every conversation. We can be on the same footing and talk about what our podcasts can do for sponsors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u27a9 <\/span><b><i>We want to expand features<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have a whole new stats system coming! It\u2019s not only being redefined to allow for IAB compliance, but also for new features and expansion of stats reporting!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve had many suggestions, and requests about your experience of our stats and ways we can make them better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve heard you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are coming! And they will make you very happy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the stats UI will be completely mobile responsive and even users on an iPhone SE will be able to easily access and view stats.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u27a9 <\/span><b>We are addressing shifting end-user habits<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The podcast industry continues to change and evolve, as does consumer behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As does podcast length.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As do request protocols.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As do distribution methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the above impact download filtering and algorithms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of our release includes addressing download numbers for shows who have been impacted by shifts in end-user habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These shifts have created some obstacles for our download reporting. This update addresses them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know when you hit that play button five times in a row trying to download a podcast from your mobile device? These extra requests (when you hit play) are a small piece of what we have always been working to filter out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five people didn\u2019t download your show\u2026 one person hit the download button five times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a lot to keep an eye on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The size of the episode file.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The app it is being accessed from and if it is via a cellular or wifi connection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rogue bots out there wreaking havoc on your feed pressing play (so to speak) and requesting a download with no human action involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, there is such a thing!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these factors and more have led to higher numbers for some shows and this release will adjust numbers to account for a combination of factors and reset download numbers so they are closer to IAB Compliant reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Accurate Podcast Download Stats Matter<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accurate <\/span><b>podcast download stats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help creators understand how their shows are performing over time while providing advertisers, networks, and publishers with consistent measurement across the industry. Before the adoption of IAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines, different podcast hosting platforms often counted downloads differently, making it difficult to compare performance or evaluate audience size with confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By using standardized measurement and filtering invalid requests, <\/span><b>podcast download stats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> become a more reliable benchmark for tracking podcast growth, demonstrating audience engagement, and making informed decisions about content, marketing, and monetization.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How the New Measurement Affects Your Podcast Download Stats<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u27a9 <\/span><b><i>The measurement has changed<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve defined what the IAB is. We shared why it\u2019s important that we are 100% AIB compliant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order for us to be 100% AIB compliant, we\u2019ve had to make some changes and will continue to make changes to the way that we measure downloads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means we are going to start reporting on Daily Uniques based on the parameters set forth by the IAB. We will move away from our existing filters to the ones set forth by the IAB. This really means we are changing what we will define as a download and report back to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some updates to measurement were already implemented in August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next significant update happens September 18.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will continue to subtly refine and iterate the changes as we prepare for December\u2019s stats update, which is when we will roll out our new interface for stats reporting and all those fancy new features!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u27a9 <\/span><b><i>How much will your downloads go down<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we make these changes and streamline the way that we measure downloads, you may notice changes to your stats \u2013 in fact, you might have already noticed some changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different podcasts will be affected differently due to many factors such as which applications your audience uses most to access your show, do they access mostly from mobile via wifi or cellular, and what is the average file size of your episodes. Measuring podcast downloads, it\u2019s filtering and algorithms are a fine balance that involves consumption behaviors, file size, podcast length, request protocol, and distribution methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the above are different depending on your podcast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some podcasts might see a very subtle drop in downloads, others might see a much larger dip. There is no way for us to tell any specific show ahead of time the exact amount their show will be impacted by these changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can say these changes will provide ALL users with more accurate download numbers especially with regards to unique users.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u27a9 <\/span><b><i>They will, however, be IAB Standard!<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is something to be excited about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be able to say to advertisers or other podcasters that your downloads are IAB Compliant IS a good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have one common method of measurement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One meaningful and universal way of talking about our show\u2019s growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is important for the future of our industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As other companies move towards the same compliance in reporting this will bring greater weight to your download numbers and all downloads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will all be talking about the same unit of measure with confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing your stats drop never feels good and even the IAB. Compliance will not be 100% perfect.
