When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I had thought about doing a column on this topic (how to stay \u201cjuicy\u201d even after 50) but the local newspaper wasn\u2019t biting.<\/p>\n

Thought about turning it into a blog when my husband said, \u201cNo one reads anymore. Why don\u2019t you do something juicy yourself and learn how to podcast?\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the name of your show about and what is it about?<\/h3>\n

Keep it Juicy!<\/a> \u2013 a 30-minute interview podcast where I talk to experts about how to live a juicy life \u2013 experts in relationships, finance, health and sex, all kinds of things! The content is aimed at those over 50, but I am often surprised by people under 50 who say they listen in.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

I record with Cast (used to use Zencastr but had too many heartbreaking tech glitches) and I\u2019m still looking for the perfect setup.<\/p>\n

I use a Plantronic headset and mic combo plugged into my laptop. My website and CMS and newsletter are all on godaddy because I LOVE their tech help, and I also have a blog on WordPress.<\/p>\n

I edit in GarageBand and then send off to Auphonic for sweetening because life\u2019s too short to do that stuff myself. The sweetened product goes to Libsyn.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

Facebook<\/a>, Twitter<\/a>, Instagram<\/a>, word of mouth, newsletter with extra guest content, creating social media messages to make it easy for guests to promote themselves.<\/p>\n

I used Buffer to load a week\u2019s worth of social media at a time so I don\u2019t have to think about anything during the week but maybe retweeting guests.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

You should create a brand that encapsulates ALL of your passion projects and not just the podcast because YOU are the brand \u2013 I\u2019ve taken to alternating the interview episodes with mini-episodes where I just talk.<\/p>\n

Those mini-episodes are a brand extension of my personal lifestyle blog Stilettos Not Required. I\u2019m trying to tie them all together and the alternating format gives me a break from frantically searching for weekly guests as well as introducing my blog following to my podcast and vice versa.<\/p>\n

I also wish I knew how SLOW audience buildup would be for this.<\/p>\n

I read somewhere (maybe Elsie?) that 9 months is kind of a magical number for the tipping point, but I think mine is a slower build because it\u2019s so broad.<\/p>\n

Had I just stuck to Charleston, SC, where I live, I would have more listeners and sponsors as well. Because my interview subjects are from all over (one even from Barcelona!) I don\u2019t have the tight focus of one city, but nor do I have the numbers that would generate national sponsorship.<\/p>\n

So I have to content myself with knowing that people are now asking ME to be on the show and that, every week, I am getting blog followers I\u2019ve never met.<\/p>\n
