When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I started podcasting in April, 2017.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I have a fairly large and dedicated following in the travel world and, specifically, for women\u2019s travel. But I felt that I had much more to share beyond my travel audience and having a podcast seemed like a great way to extend my audience, community and brand.<\/p>\n

I have a background in radio so I was already comfortable behind the mic and I wasn\u2019t intimated by the equipment. Unlike something like video which would have been a big learning curve for me, I was able to just roll up my sleeves to record and edit my own episodes.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your show about?<\/h3>\n

The She\u2019s Bold podcast<\/a> features long-form conversations (sometimes as long as two hours) with courageous women from a variety of backgrounds. These are women who excel at what they do and have some amazing stories to share about how they\u2019ve been able to accomplish what it is they are known for.<\/p>\n

Guests include Olympic athletes, adventurers, professional musicians, best-selling authors, spiritual leaders and entrepreneurs. All women.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

I only record in person and use two Audio-Technica BPHS1 Broadcast Stereo Headsets with Dynamic Boom Mics (one for me and one for my guest). Those connect into a Presonus mixer which I plug into my MacBook Air.<\/p>\n

I did recently purchase an ATR 2100 for the purpose of traveling a bit lighter with my equipment but have yet to use it!<\/p>\n

While I edited my own podcasts to begin with, it was getting too time consuming and about a year in began outsourcing the editing.<\/p>\n

I host with Libsyn. YAY Libsyn!<\/p>\n

Now that I\u2019ve learned about so many more equipment options, I probably overcomplicated my setup but I\u2019m really quite happy with the quality so I have no regrets.<\/p>\n

What I have all fits well into a Fjallraven Raven 28 backpack. And I have to give that a shoutout because it is the perfect bag for all of my equipment plus space for the ever important water bottle.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

I promote the She\u2019s Bold podcast through various methods.<\/p>\n

I have two monthly newsletters for my businesses, one with 10,000 subscribers and the other with about 3,500 subscribers. In the larger one, I add all of the episodes from the previous month and in the smaller newsletter I highlight one episode that ties into that month\u2019s newsletter content.<\/p>\n

I also have a much smaller mailing list for the podcast itself and that goes out every week as each episode is published.<\/p>\n

In addition to the newsletters, I promote each episode on Facebook through my personal page (where I have over 3,200 friends), through two business pages (one with about 10,000 followers, one with about 1,000 followers) a Facebook group I have and through the She\u2019s Bold Podcast Facebook page.<\/p>\n

I also sent each episode to the guest who was featured and ask them to share with their community. And then I send personal notes to people whom I think might enjoy that specific episode.<\/p>\n

I do send it out automatically via Libsyn into the twittersphere (24,000+ followers) but I\u2019m not a fan of Twitter so I don\u2019t spend time there.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

I\u2019d add a bit of feedback for newbie podcasters or those in their early stage of podcasting\u2026don\u2019t skimp on audio and editing quality!<\/p>\n

Many years ago when the field wasn\u2019t as crowded, it might have been OK to have a less than wonderful sounding podcast, even with great content. But there\u2019s too much competition now for a podcaster to ignore the importance of HOW your podcast sounds. Sure you\u2019re going to learn along the way and get better over time, but don\u2019t turn people off from the beginning because you don\u2019t want to invest a little money or time in creating something you can be proud of.<\/p>\n
