Q & A with Damian from Cybernautica<\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve been a podcaster since 2015. I discovered the medium around that time by listening to a few shows that revolved around a fandom I was into before eventually being inspired to start one myself!<\/p>\n

As one might imagine, a great many lessons were learned the hard way as is a pretty common story of just about everyone picking up the mic. My new show, Cybernautica, officially launched in January 2019 and is a far more ambitious project.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I wanted to get my story out.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t know what Audio Drama was back then and sort of just followed my inspiration to it.<\/p>\n

I wrote 5 minute long \u2018blog like\u2019 scripts back then from the point of view of our main character and brought on a fantastic voice actor to voice her.<\/p>\n

Eventually that led me to discovering others who were telling amazing and diverse stories through audio.<\/p>\n

To be the best writer you can be, you need to read. To be the best podcaster you can be, you need to listen. I think there is something to be said about approaching the things you love as a fan and allowing oneself to be inspired and to learn new lessons everyday.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the name of your show and what is it about?\"\"<\/h3>\n

Cybernautica is a serial, full cast audio drama based in the cyberpunk city-state of Neo-Atlantis in the year 2112.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a mouthful, I know!<\/p>\n

The listener is thrown into the world along with a wild cast of characters as they navigate the perils of the city and it\u2019s unique underworld.<\/p>\n

The first season is centered around a mercenary named Jonny as she tumbles through the trials of being a gun for hire in the toughest district of the city.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

When recording, I have a spare room set up as a studio where I do occasional voice work in addition to my own show.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m using a Blue Yeti as I have a very controlled environment and it picks up the bass in my voice in a good, rich way.<\/p>\n

Software wise, many are surprised to find out that I\u2019m using Audacity to sound engineer Cybernautica. For season 2, I\u2019ll be taking a friend up on an offer to teach me up on Studio One.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

We\u2019ve mostly promoted through trying to be a good, positive part of the audio drama community on twitter.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a big believer of the 80\/20 rule, which is interacting\/being a fan\/lifting up my peers for the lions share of my time on twitter while talking about our show only about 20% of the time.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a great journey, establishing our brand while (I hope) becoming a useful and valued participant in the community as a whole. The rising tide lifts all ships, after all.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

Wow, this is a huge question. I feel many might be tempted to answer it on the technical side of things?<\/p>\n

For me, the biggest lessons as a creator came through learning social media. I answered some of that in the last question. I think the biggest one though counts for everyone no matter how big or small a show, and they came to me through my friend and mentor, Sarah Rhea Werner of \u2018Girl in Space\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not judge your success by the metrics of others.\u201d Lots of weird things happen in your head when you\u2019re pouring your heart into a project and it\u2019s SO easy to feel jealous of someones success, their numbers or their engagement and reach on social media.<\/p>\n

There are so many aspects that can go into creating a following for your show and getting out there and so many of them end up coming back to persistence and being in the right place at the right time.<\/p>\n

Keeping a positive head space and just doing your best to work on your show, yourself and your art are basically the best things you can do for yourself as a creative.<\/p>\n
