When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

December 31, 2016.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

I started a podcast for three reasons.<\/p>\n

One, I needed a hobby. I have loved sports all my life, so I knew I had plenty to say.<\/p>\n

Two, my podcast fulfilled one of many childhood dreams of being a sportscaster. I gave myself permission to re-imagine\u00a0what that looked like.<\/p>\n

Three, I wanted to create a safe space for women to discuss sports without male intrusion.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the name of your show and what is it about?<\/h3>\n

Black Girls Talk Sports<\/a> is a weekly podcast where women of color discuss all things sports.<\/p>\n

My co-host, Angela Spears, and I are on a mission to inspire, educate, and encourage women to participate in conversations about sports.<\/p>\n

Our sign-off is \u201cKeep It Sporty.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.<\/h3>\n

We use the following equipment to record and edit the episodes:<\/p>\n

Zoom H6 Recorder<\/p>\n

Behringer MicroAMP HA400 headphone amplifier \u2013 this allow us to have up to 4 people listen while recording and have individual volume controls for each listener<\/p>\n

Radial Engineering Stagebug Passive Stereo Laptop DI (SB\u20135 Sidewinder) to connect the computer headphone output to the Zoom Recorder for Skype calls \u2013 this device removes hum that can occur when connecting to a computer\u2019s headphone jack.<\/p>\n

Audio-Technica ATR\u20132100 Microphones<\/p>\n

We edit in Adobe Audition.<\/p>\n

We use WordPress for the website.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

I believe you can\u2019t promote a podcast without podcasting. I podcast consistently. Then, I share each podcast episodes on social media (Twitter<\/a>, Facebook<\/a>, Instagram<\/a>, and LinkedIn) using the Libsyn link or my website so that everyone can access it.<\/p>\n

I partner with a group of podcasters on Twitter to retweet my new episodes. I use only two or three hashtags on a Twitter post so that engagement doesn\u2019t decrease.<\/p>\n

Also, I share episodes in my closed Facebook Group (women only) where I engage with listeners daily. I do the same thing for any media coverage about the podcast.<\/p>\n

I have a podcast app that was developed by Libsyn. People tend to understand \u201cdownload the app\u201d more so than \u201csubscribe to my podcast.\u201d<\/p>\n

I mention the app on the podcast and share the link in all my correspondence. Also, I have created how to videos on accessing the podcast using Alexa and TuneIn.<\/p>\n

I posted them on social media. I give the same instructions during several podcast episodes.<\/p>\n

The podcast offers a free football resource for listeners to download (PDF).<\/p>\n

I share this evergreen content on social media multiple times a year. I track the number of downloads using Libsyn.<\/p>\n

Before the pandemic, I wore my own podcast merchandise at least three times a week. I was a walking billboard. I\u2019ve been wearing name brands all my life, why not wear my own.<\/p>\n

I have marketed and hosted an event for International Podcast Day. It gave me an opportunity to feature my podcast. I have attended networking and sporting events where I distributed business cards with podcast information.<\/p>\n

I have been a panelist for a podcast event, and I\u2019ve been a guest on other podcasts. I have applied for and received media credentials to cover events on behalf of the podcast.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

If I had known podcasting was this much fun, I would\u2019ve started it sooner. I get to chat with best friend almost every week about something that I love. Priceless.<\/p>\n
