Q & A with Jesenia and Jaime from \u00bfQu\u00e9 Me Cuentas?<\/h2>\n

When did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

We started our podcast on November 19th of 2020, a couple months after winning the Earbuds Pitch Competition which is part of the Outliers Podcast Festival.<\/p>\n

Why did you start podcasting?<\/h3>\n

We started podcasting because we wanted to add more Latinx voices to podcasting, especially in the Storytelling genre.<\/p>\n

We\u2019d created a monthly storytelling event in Boyle Heights\u00a0 a few years back for a full year and loved it, and had been meaning to bring it back in some form, so when the opportunity presented itself to pitch our Latinx Storytelling idea we took it.<\/p>\n

We wanted a podcast filled with the heartwarming, sometimes funny, always relatable stories we were hearing while attending writing workshops at Casa 0101 Theater in Boyle Heights, the Alivio Open Mic in Southeast L.A. and other similar brown spaces.<\/p>\n

Some of these raw heartbreaking stories shared in class are the most beautiful. We also love including storytellers with a wide range of experience and we don\u2019t ever want our podcast to feel like we were trying too hard to ram up our Latinidad, or like we\u2019re over explaining and translating anything.<\/p>\n

We wanted a podcast that allows the\u00a0English and Spanish to come in and out naturally for whoever is sharing and also it was important that our podcast have multigenerational representation because there is so much value in what we can all learn from one another.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the name of your show and what is it about?<\/h3>\n

Our podcast\u2019s full name is \u00bfQu\u00e9 Me Cuentas?: a mostly Latinx Storytelling Podcast.<\/p>\n

It is about featuring the day to day experiences of our community.\u00a0 We choose a theme and we invite storytellers to share their stories around that theme.<\/p>\n

Our show is about highlighting the diverse experience and voices of the Latinx community.<\/p>\n

Our goal each episode is to share authentic moments as told by the storytellers, and we hope to touch a piece of your heart, inspire you to write your own story, or to validate the experiences many of us have faced.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your podcasting set-up?<\/h3>\n

Currently we are using the equipment we received as our prize for winning the pitch competition.<\/p>\n

Focusrite generously doubled the prize after our win since they heard we were both hosting and recording separately. It\u2019s their Scarlett 2i2 Studio bundle. It included a third-generation 2-in, 2-out USB audio interface,\u00a0 a condenser mic, and headphones.<\/p>\n

Plus the cables and software we might need, however as far as software we\u2019re currently just using Garageband. Also our guest storytellers sometimes have their own professional set up at home but many\u00a0 have just used the Voice Memos App on their phones, and we\u2019ve made it work.<\/p>\n

We hope to one day soon learn more about mixing and mastering, and ideally hope to record in person with our storytellers most of the time when they are local.<\/p>\n

How have you promoted your podcast?<\/h3>\n

We have mostly just relied on word of mouth and social media like Instagram<\/a>, Twitter<\/a> and Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re only a few episodes in and plan to look into it more once we\u2019ve gotten a good consistent rhythm going in terms of putting episodes out.<\/p>\n

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?<\/h3>\n

One of the things I wish we\u2019d known when we started was to record and edit at least three episodes before releasing our 1st episode. With our format, where we are very dependent on other folks coming through with the stories, having some breathing room allows for more planning, and quality in the episodes.<\/p>\n

It probably makes the experience a lot more pleasant, although we\u2019re both really enjoying putting these episodes together. The technical part is not our strong suit. This is a very homemade, makeshift system we have right now. Another issue we\u2019ve evolved in is overthinking.<\/p>\n

We are both very neurotic overthinkers and sometimes that gets in the way of\u00a0 us moving forward.\u00a0 Part of this is learning and stumbling publicly as we go.<\/p>\n

We now know that it\u2019s okay that we\u2019re not perfect, and that we\u2019re going to get better at storytelling and hosting as we go.<\/p>\n

In the meantime we\u2019re creating something that many folks within and outside of our communities are really connecting with.<\/p>\n

Jesenia and Jaime are part of a cross culture of people in the US that live in both languages. They saw a gap in the stories that our Spanglish speakers were telling that were not being heard because there was no one to tell them. What do you have to share that people are not hearing and should?\u00a0 Jaime and Jesenia started Que Me Cuentas? After realizing that these stories are global and how many people live in both languages, daily.<\/strong><\/p>\n
