Q & A with Dan from Cracking the Code of Spy Movies

When did you start podcasting?

We started podcasting in June 2019 and have 147 episodes out as of April 2022!

What made you think about starting a podcast?

We started to podcast about spy movies because we felt there was a need to go beyond James Bond.

So, we cover classic spy movies, from the 1935 film The 39 Steps directed by Hitchcock, to James Bond, Mission: Impossible and current releases as well.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

The show is called Cracking the Code of Spy Movies.

We decode spy movies from classics to current releases, diving deeply into scene analysis, the pre-title sequences, gadgets and more.

In addition, we interview directors, actors and authors as well.

Currently, we are  promoting our monthly “Spy Movie News” episodes where we research for hours to summarize in 15 minutes: listening time, what is happening with new spy movie releases, actors, acquisitions and other spy movie info! Very popular!

Our goal is that our listeners will discover something NEW in EVERY episode! We do a lot of research!

What’s your podcast set up?

We use a Rodecaster Pro to record our episodes with Shure microphones.

We also record over Zoom.

And we use a variety of software to edit, like Audacity, Adobe and more.

How have you promoted your podcast?

We have done some Facebook advertising and have had a lot of word-of-mouth success as well.

But we need to be better and reach more listeners!  We have a major presence on Facebook (with 13,000+ followers) and on Twitter and Instagram.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

We wish in the beginning we knew how difficult it is to grow a following — it happens but it takes time and lots of effort.

Dan Silvestri saw something lacking in the spy movie podcast world. He wanted to go beyond James Bond, to dive deep into everything from classic to new releases, discussing scene analysis, the pre-title sequences, gadgets and more. Apparently, a lot of other listeners were feeling the dearth, too! If you’re one of them, check out Cracking the Code of Spy Movies on Apple or Spotify today!
