Q & A with Brodie from A Healthy Curiosity

When did you start podcasting?

July 2016

Why did you start podcasting?

For the past 15+ years in my clinical practice of Chinese Medicine (that’s acupuncture, herbology, lifestyle and diet counseling, as well as leading retreats and teaching qi gong and meditation), I’ve been hearing the same things from smart, self-aware women over and over again: anxiety, depression, insomnia, hormone imbalance caused by a gap between what they know they need to be doing to take care of themselves and actually doing it.

I see too many women who don’t feel like they have the right to be at the top of their own to-do lists (myself chief among them), and feeling GUILTY for doing the very things that they absolutely must do in order to be healthy, and to be present for the people they love and for their work in the world.

I started seeing self-care as a feminist issue. I wanted these women to feel less alone. I wanted to arm them with evidence that that their daily choices like whether or not to meditate, exercise, give themselves enough rest, nourishment, connection to themselves, others, and what lights them up matters. Not only is it not self-ish, it’s essential to embodying self-respect as women.

In addition to wanting to bolster women’s commitments to essential practices of self-care, I wanted to bring lesser known healing modalities and approaches into the light.

I wanted to bring on expert evidence from both the wisdom traditions of Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda into practical strategies for daily living. I wanted to bridge the gap between what I – and other experts in the fields of health and wellness know and what’s generally considered part of the conversation. Because health is not just about the absence of disease – it’s being who we really are, and expressing our innate gifts to help evolve the consciousness on the planet.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

The show is called A Healthy Curiosity: on being well in a busy world. It’s a big mishmash of interviews on functional medicine, deep dives into Chinese Medical theory, personal chats where we explore what gets in the way of our best intentions: perfectionism, big goals, habits and routines, chronic pain, overwork and overwhelm, boundaries, limiting beliefs — and what it takes to overcome such obstacles mindfully.

What’s your podcasting set-up?

I plug in an ATR–1000 microphone and use zoom to record.

How have you promoted your podcast?

I share it on facebook, twitter, linkedin, and with my email list. I also frequently guest on other people’s podcasts and mention it there.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Your loyalty is to your audience. No one is entitled to be on your show, so don’t think twice about canning an interview that you don’t feel good about. Also, embrace the spreadsheet idea for planning and tracking the status of your episodes, especially if you outsource any aspect of your editing or production.

Are you someone that knows what you need to do for healthy aligned living but are not doing what you’re supposed to do? Taking action is simply too hard! Well, it’s time for you to subscribe and listen to A Healthy Curiosity!
