Q & A with Cafe With Monica

When did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting when I was working towards my license as a therapist in 2018. I was still an intern and felt major imposter syndrome to show up in the space. I remember at first wanting to do a YouTube channel but fear of showing up on camera.

In November 2018, while driving back from Louisiana to our home in Dallas, my husband was reading Gary Vaynerchuk’s book Crushing It.

We were talking about passions and he was sharing some of Gary’s advice in the book and that’s when my husband said, “You should do a podcast”! Of course, self-doubt immediately kicked in and I said no way I couldn’t do that. I don’t think my voice is that important.

My husband gave me a pep talk and said, “You have so much to say and no voice is the same as yours.”

So, we talked more and combined both my love for coffee and counseling for my business. I am an avid coffee drinker and love scoping different coffee shops in DFW and I also love looking out and seeing all the conversations people are having over coffee so that’s when Café with Monica came to life.

I thought, how cool would it be to make difficult unspoken topics into conversations you can easily talk about with a friend over coffee. I want to change people’s view on therapists in that we are not all clinicians who have you lay in a long couch to ask you, “How do you feel about that?”

I figured that I could use social media to build a brand and start adding value to my followers by providing anxiety, stress relief techniques, and everyday life encouragement. I knew I specifically wanted to help millennial entrepreneurs like myself.

Why did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting to be part of the solution in minimizing mental health stigma. To allow future clients to get to know me. I was passionate about sharing other people’s stories that typically nobody likes talking about and bringing them to surface.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

Since it first launched in 2019, Cafe with Monica has evolved. It depicts a millennial counselor’s view on how to deal with the everyday and not-so-everyday situations that surface in the lives of millennial entrepreneurs.

I am the voice behind the brand, an individual who knows the struggles are real, having my own unique perspective as a first-generation college graduate and Hispanic-American. The stories I share are full of failures and accomplishments, family struggles, and personal growth.

With my expertise as a vocational and mental health counselor, I offer personal advice, professional knowledge, & actionable ways for listeners to start improving their quality of life. All of this takes place in a setting that makes you feel like you are in a coffee shop talking to a friend.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

My podcast setup includes the Audio Technica ATR2100 with a shock mount and Arm Stand.

I use Garageband to record and edit podcast episodes.

I organize my podcasts through using Google Drive and Asana now that I have an editor to help us make sure the podcast episodes release smoothly.

How have you promoted your podcast?

Several ways, I have been on other people’s podcasts, blog features, Facebook groups, family & friends, and promoting it through my own social media channels like Instagram and Facebook.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I wish podcasters would talk more about the initial stages of podcasting and how much hard work it takes as well as building systems to sustain your podcasts.

That’s why I decided to create Wellness PodcastersTM, where I help wellness professionals create podcasts to create additional streams of income.

I believe podcasts can be very powerful that’s why I am working on Wellness Podcasters Academy, a course and group coaching  program to help individuals just like myself who thought their voice didn’t matter who don’t know where to even start. I will provide the step by step tools and actional steps to get their show up an running.
