Q & A with Stacey from Side Hustle Teachers
When did you start podcasting?
I started my first podcast Jan 1, 2018. It lasted a year and I learned soooooo much. When I launched my current podcast in March of 2019 it was with a new brand, seasons instead of weekly, and a much clearer vision.
Why did you start podcasting?
My first successful side hustle was a blog and I loved it. Honestly, I though podcasts were a hipster thing and dismissed the medium without ever hearing one.
Then I started walking.
I had signed up for the Avon 39, a 39.3 mile walk through the boroughs of NYC, and I was as out of shape as a stepped on lump of Play-Doh. So I had a lot of training to do.
A friend suggested I listen to a podcast, Serial, while I was walking. I was hooked right away. Then I started season 2 and meh. So I was on the hunt for something else to listen to. And what I found was a litany of podcasts for women with businesses!
When I started my next business I knew I had to have a podcast to support it.
It was the perfect format. I got to talk and share my thoughts but I could do it in sweats with Cheeto crumbs on my shirt!
What’s the name of your show and what is it about?
Side Hustle Teachers is for educators who want to start a business to break free of Broke Teacher Syndrome.
I give tips and practical advice so teachers can make bank while still being the boss in the classroom.
All our guests are current or former teachers who share their journeys, mindset shifts, and practical tips for starting and growing a side hustle.
What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.
I started with a Blue Yeti, but with a husband, daughter, dog and a cat at home, it just picked up too much ambient noise, so I recently switched to an ATR2100.
I record and edit my show in Audition, when it’s just me, or Zoom when I have a guest.
How have you promoted your podcast?
I started a Facebook group to go along with my podcast and business. In the group I ask what my audience wants to know about, recruit guests, and promote my show. We’re currently at about 4,300 members!
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
With my first podcast, I wish I had known how long it takes to produce an episode. As someone who’s a side hustlin’ teacher myself, time is at a premium. When I started my second show I decided to run seasons to fit into my schedule.
I also wish I’d been okay with a few umms and uhhs. I could have saved so much time rerecording and editing! Listeners what to hear from real people, and real people occasionally say umm.
