Q & A with Tamara from Still Figuring it Out

When did you start podcasting?

I started putting things together at the end of 2019. I gave myself  til the end of January 2020 to release an episode so that I would follow through and not chicken out. January 22 I recorded and uploaded my first episode.

Why did you start podcasting?

I have listened to podcast for a while and I found them really interesting. I have a passion for encouraging people, especially women. I have always wanted to do it on a larger scale and this seemed like the ideal format.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

My podcast is titled : “Still Figuring It Out”. It’s a podcast for people like myself in their 40’s that are still trying to navigate their way through life.

We’re not quite where we want to be but not where we used to be. I encourage people to make the necessary steps to create the life they want, regardless of their age  or circumstances.

I discuss how the past can sometimes hold you back in the future. The goal is to get the listener to become the best version of themselves.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

Right now I have a very basic setup. I spent $20 on a Fifine Technology. I know there are others that are significantly better but I didn’t want to invest too much until I was sure I would stick to recording.

As for recording and editing, I use Audacity. It was recommended by a lot of podcasters and it is free. I’m still learning how to use it but it has worked for me so far.

How have you promoted your podcast?

In the beginning, I promoted primarily by word of mouth. After a couple of episodes, I created a page on Facebook.

I can’t honestly say that it helped much but I still use it for promoting.

I recently started using Headliner to create audiograms to post on Instagram. Headliner has definitely made a difference for me in reaching more listeners.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

There are so many things that I wish I knew when I started. For instance, I underestimated the process of creating an avatar. If you know who you’re speaking to, it makes it a lot easier.

I discovered that being a solo host and non-interview (yet) podcast is extremely hard. You have no one to bounce ideas off of or to take some of the load.

Also, you really learn how well you communicate. I never realized how much I say, “um and you know.”  I now here when I’m saying it whether recording or not
