Q & A with Tony from The Finding Subjects Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

Well, I started listening to podcasts last year. I’ve always been into recording audio, even as a child walking around with a tape recorder recording bees, birds, cars passing by, motorcycles, it has always been fascinating to me that we have the ability to document and record sound to be played whenever we wish.

I remember my mother and sister recording cassette tapes and sending them to my brother-in law who was serving in Vietnam. It was amazing to me this could be done. So I did the same to my children when my wife was pregnant, I thought, how amazing would this be that many many years into the future, they’ll hear me talking to them and they weren’t even born yet.

Then adversity came into my life big time, I soon found myself home, with my children trying to help my wife raise them and simultaneously trying to figure out my new life with a health adversity.

I needed to break up the negativity with something, music has always been there for me as well as photography, but writing was something I was very interested in as well so I tried that with no professional success. I realized I wrote in first person, as if I was telling a story, and I also wrote how I speak…

That doesn’t always work so well for literary agents and I hand the rejection cards and letters, hundreds of them, thanking me kindly but rejecting just the same.

I did some soul searching looked back at what people have always told me and requested of me, and that was to tell my stories of my adventures in life. I’ve had some interesting ones. And simultaneously, I would listen to radio late into the night and I caught a show which was very interesting to me, it was basically a podcast being broadcast via radio, and BAM, I knew that was something I wanted to try.

I sold my most prized possession, my Nikon DSLR camera setup, and began purchasing used recording equipment while simultaneously researching more about this podcasting thing.

One constant that continued to surface was a particular name…Libsyn…and after feeling confident with the equipment I had gathered up, I chose Libsyn to be my host and I have no regrets! So to answer the question, I’ve been at Podcasting since September of 2018!

Why did you start podcasting?

I podcast because it fill that need I have to communicate with others. I’ve also dealt with not only my health problem but along with that a public speaking/anxiety problem that people who know me would say: absolutely no way he has an issue speaking in front of people, he was a singer in a band for God’s sake!

But it’s true, I never felt comfortable speaking in front of people but that didn’t stop people from requesting me to do eulogies, speeches etc… it was crazy and hard for me to do.

Podcasting has given me a voice and a platform, it allows me to share my life stories in the hope that people will be entertained.

What most people don’t know is that there’s another side as to why I Podcast.

These podcasts have another meaning. They are audio journals basically, for my family and friends in the event anything ever happens to me, there’s an audio journal of sorts that not only I share with the world, but it’s there for them to hear me anytime they need me and I’m not around anymore. I mean we all have to go someday, I just needed to find a way to be there for my family when  they’d need me, even if I wasn’t alive anymore. It’s that beauty of sound recording thing all over again.

And also…each episode is all positive, nothing negative, and each one, except maybe the Halloween episode, has an important positive life message within it and something interesting to be learned from the episode. All of that is why I Podcast!

What’s the name of your show about and what is it about?

The show is called Finding Subjects Podcast, because that is exactly what I do, go out, search for, and hopefully find, interesting subjects hiding in plain sight for all of us to learn about and simultaneously share with others. That’s why I do this. Not for monetary gains which there are none, just simply to share a message of positivity and mindfulness with the world.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

The heart of my recording equipment is a Zoom H6, I record directly to that. I bought it used on Facebook Marketplace.

I have Shure SM58’s for my guests. I prefer to use a Sennheiser e835 for myself, after trying many different mics this one works with my voice.

I recommend trying the same thing, seeing what works for you.

I use Hindenburg Journalist software, it works for me. Again, there are many good products there like Audacity and Garage Band which are excellent. Hindenburg was the one I chose. Try all of the free trials out there as well, then make your choice.

For a podcast platform well, it’s Libsyn for me, I love Libsyn. It’s easy to use, well designed, support is fantastic, a great choice for any level podcasting.

Headphones I purchased used Audio Technica.

How have you promoted your podcast?

I’ve never used any advertising for my podcast. It’s just not in the budget. My theory is that if people like it maybe/hopefully they’ll share it.  That’s just about the only way my numbers will go up. I try my best to entertain with a positive and enlightening story each show. That’s all I have.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I have no regrets as far as mistakes I’ve made trying to learn this. It takes a lot of time but to me it’s like a very interesting hobby and that’s how I keep it in my mind so it’s always fun to do.
Like anything in life to be good at something you have to keep at it. Thankfully for me I’ve really enjoyed telling stories my entire life, it’s just getting up in front of large crowds that bothered me. With podcasting, I sit in front of a microphone and speak to people from all over the world. It’s kind of very cool crazy!!!
