Q & A with Nicole from the WinHers United

When did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting on March 1, 2018 in commemoration of Women’s History Month.

Why did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting in an effort to be the change I wanted to see in the world. There are three problems I have experienced and am adamant about doing my part to solve.

Having a growth mindset is necessary for success, yet many people do not understand this concept. In the past I was one of these people, and gratefully today I am not. My podcast focuses on self-leadership and mindset to help others realize a better way of life.

Women of Color face a double disadvantage in our society. Women are not treated equally to men, and people of color are not treated equally to those that are not of color. My podcast serves as a representation for the underrepresented by solely featuring Women of Color.

Women as a whole have a tendency of being more combative and competitive, as opposed to cordial and collaborative. I believe it is important to treat people with respect and be nice while doing so. My podcast shows that women can embrace and celebrate each other without being threatened by one another.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

My podcast is WinHers United. WinHers United contains leadership insight, personal experiences, and business expertise from leading Women of Color Entrepreneurs.

WinHers United is a seasonal production, featuring 18 amazing ladies per season. The guests of WinHers United share stories about life and entrepreneurship to help those wanting to impact the world in a major way.

WinHers United focuses on topics such as Self-Discovery, Self-Leadership, Mindset, Self-Care, Productivity, and Success Strategies. Listeners are given the opportunity to make business connections, grow personally and professionally, as well as be inspired and motivated.

Although the guests are limited to Women of Color Entrepreneurs the content is for any individual wanting to be empowered and empower on!

Since the creation of the show it has become a highly acclaimed and well respected platform. Over the last two years, it has gained a global presence receiving downloads in 81 countries, and counting, around the world.

It was recently voted number 2 of the 10 Best Female Leadership Podcasts to Tune Into on International Women’s Day by Listen Notes. Player FM deemed it as one of the Best Women of Color Podcasts around in 2019 and 2020.

While Feedspot Blog ranked She Leads Podcast (now rebranded to WinHers United) number 5 out of the Top 20 Women Leadership Podcasts You Must Follow in 2019 and 2020. It was also referenced in a research paper focusing on the impacts of empowering podcasts for women of color, presented at the 2019 National Pop-Culture Association in Washington, D.C.

How have you promoted your podcast?

I use various methods, some of which include: being featured in publications, being a guest on other podcasts, being a facilitator/speaker at numerous events, using social media, and networking while attending various conference and business gatherings.

Recently I was named one of the Top 50 Moms in Podcasting by Podcast Magazine, which has also helped to increase awareness.

Out of these methods I would say I use social media promotion more frequently. I have accounts on most of the social media platforms; however, I am most active on Facebook and LinkedIN.

I use my personal Facebook page, the podcast page, as well as posting in the various Facebook Groups I am affiliated with to get the word out. I have also used Facebook Ads sparingly in the past as well. I plan to expand promotional efforts in the near future to include an email marketing campaign.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Slow and steady wins the race. Within my first year of podcasting I made a few decisions and errors that have impacted my numbers and slowed my growth.

Taking the advice of others I decided to pull the content from previous seasons down from the Libsyn server in an effort to repackage for monetization.

After deciding I did not want to go this route I added the previous content back; however, I deleted some of the previous files from the Libsyn server instead of just disabling them.

I do not think removing content to package for sale is a bad idea; however, I do believe I made this decision prematurely as the podcast was just starting to get traction. Also, because I deleted previous files instead of disabling them I know my stats would be higher for some of the episodes released during Season 1.
