Q & A with James from The A-League Show
When did you start podcasting?
The A-League Show was first published in October of 2012, but I started my first podcast (now obsolete) in 2011.
Why did you start podcasting?
I had been an avid podcast listener for a couple of years and developed a real passion for the medium which naturally led to creating my own show.
What’s your show about?
The A-League, Australia’s top professional soccer league. It’s a weekly show, reviewing previous games and previewing upcoming matches. We also have regular soccer media guests on to discuss all the big talking points and news stories around the league.
What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.
I have an audio production background so I take my gear quite seriously.
I use an Allen & Heath mixer with Rode Procaster microphones.
I record the show into Logic Pro, running on a MacBook Pro then mix and edit in Pro Tools and I use Audio Hijack Pro to record Skype calls for guests.
I also have a portable kit for recording interviews outside the home studio, which includes a Tascam portable recorder and Shure SM58 mics.
As for our website, it’s hosted by the excellent Squarespace. I’m an audio guy, not a web design guy so they make it all incredibly easy. And they’re big supporters of podcasting so it’s a good fit.
How have you promoted your podcast?
Social media is the main driving force behind our promotion.
Luckily for us, there’s an incredibly strong online soccer community full of passionate fans so we make a real point of getting involved in that community and engaging with followers and listeners within our niche. Word of mouth tends to help a little bit too.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
Preparation is so important. You can never prepare too much or have too many notes. I now spend just as much time on pre-production as I do on recording and post-production.
