Q & A with Jan and RJ from The Apex Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting in 2018 after a friend of mine (our producer Mr. Jacob Popio) recommended that I take my blogging and writing skills to the audio format. It’s been one heck of a ride ever since!

Why did you start podcasting?

The idea for our podcast was originally formed around a blog Jan started after twelve middle school/high school age kids committed suicide during the 2017–2018 school year in our county.

He wanted to create content that highlighted ordinary people accomplishing things because we all felt like everyone in our area was completely and utterly hopeless.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

The Apex Podcast is a show where a nurse and a bodybuilder highlight ORDINARY people accomplishing EXTRAORDINARY things and distill down the practical life advice they learned throughout their journeys into something you can use on a daily basis.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

We use the best hosting service around. Obviously LIBSYN!

We also utilize Shure SM7B microphones, a Behringer UMC404-HD Interface, and Garage Band run on a custom 15in Macbook Pro.

How have you promoted your podcast?

I have mostly promoted the podcast by performing outreach to the community. I try to speak to groups of people younger than myself as often as I can, and then refer them back to the podcast. We also have Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIN and Patreon pages.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Jan: I really wish I knew how important it is to really nail down your niche before you jump into recording things with guests. You can have a decent idea of what you want to say, but it takes A LOT of practice before you’re going to be comfortable recording with a guest. So practice, practice, practice!

RJ: How fast a week goes by. I really feel like keeping a bank of episodes is something that I wish I would have paid more attention to when we first started. Once you start to feel that responsibility to your listeners to produce high quality content, it can be rough trying to keep up! Especially if you’re interviewing guests out of state or trying to schedule interviews close together.

Who is up for for ordinary people doing extraordinary things? I mean… Awesomeness! Why not subscribe STAT?
