Q & A with Fitz from Knock Once For Yes
When did you start podcasting?
We started our show in October of 2016
Why did you start podcasting?
We really enjoyed listening to paranormal podcasts, and although there were some great shows out there, at the time we couldn’t find anyone producing a show with the mix of true ghost stories, history and legends that we craved – so we decided to produce one ourselves!
Also, one of our favourite hobbies is going on road trips to check out haunted historical locations, so incorporating that into our podcast gave us the perfect excuse to plan more trips!
What’s the name of your show and what is it about?
Our show is called Knock Once For Yes, it’s a paranormal podcast where we share our own spooky experiences and those of our listeners, we explore local legends, haunted locations, urban myths and delve into the UK’s haunted history.
We actually visit the vast majority of locations that we talk about on the show, so our listeners are getting our own first-hand accounts as well as the history and legends of the locations.
What’s your podcasting set-up?
On the hardware side, we use a home built Desktop PC running Windows 10, A Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 interface, and a pair of Shure SM7b microphones boosted with a Cloudlifter CL2.
On the software side we use Cakewalk by Bandlab DAW, using various VST plugins though most commonly Izotope Neutron, Izotope RX, Waves Scheps Omni Channel and the Roland CA2A compressor
I’m always really surprised to hear so few people recommend Cakewalk as software for producing podcasts.
It is a fully featured, professional standard DAW (which I actually use professionally in my business as well) and it’s completely free.
How have you promoted your podcast?
We have the usual Facebook Page & Group, Twitter and Instagram but we’ve found that working with other podcasters, mostly by appearing on each other’s shows has been the most effective means of getting the word out.
Podcasters really are a friendly and helpful bunch in the main, we were concerned when we started that the podcasting world would be cut-throat and competitive, but in reality we found nothing but support and encouragement – the podcasting community is a very positive place.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
How much work is involved in writing and producing a regular show, though I worry that if we knew exactly how much work was involved before we started, we’d never have decided to launch a podcast!
Producing our show is very time consuming and can be a struggle to fit around a full time job, so it would have been a good idea if we had produced a back catalogue of a few shows before launching; if we had started out with several episodes in hand it would have taken away some of the pressure of working to a tight deadline all the time.
