Q & A with Ashley from Washed Away

When did you start podcasting?

Back in 2016

Why did you start podcasting?

I worked in radio for years so I think it was just the logical next step. Podcasting allowed me to still use my skills and tell stories through audio, but with way more creative freedom.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

My passion project right now is a podcast called Washed Away. I cover cold cases and missing persons from Washington state, where I live. I always talk to someone involved with the case like family members, retired detectives, forensic artists, etc.

My goal with this show is to bring more attention (and hopefully new leads) to unsolved cases and this way I’m able to tell true crime stories, but not just for entertainment value.

What’s your podcasting set-up?

I use a Shure SM7B microphone, Sony MDR–7506 headphones, Focusrite Scarlett interface, and Adobe Audition.

How have you promoted your podcast?

I promote Washed Away mostly through Twitter, Instagram and word of mouth, but also with a few ads on similar podcasts.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I’m still working on new episodes as I go which means that every other week I have to do research, interview a guest, write the script, voice my parts, and edit everything together… on top of my day job (which ironically is doing the same thing for other podcasts) and it can lead to burnout super quick.

After a long day of editing someone else’s podcast, I rarely want to work on my own. So for my next season of Washed Away, I’d like to get all the episodes done before the launch to avoid editing fatigue and scrambling so much between release dates.

Washed Away digs deep into true crime cases that have gone cold in Washington State.  If you are into factual true crime stories you need to add this podcast to your list, you can catch it on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

Do you like to investigate when you find a good story and put the pieces together?  Ashley did and she loved true crime. Discovering that those two elements together were something she could make a podcast about was a revelation that became her podcast Washed Away.  Have you found something that you are good at and can talk about it with anyone?  Turn it into a podcast, we can help!  Check out our Start Your Podcast blog series.
