Q & A with Jackie from Forty Thrive

When did you start podcasting?

My very first podcast was in 2009 and was called Napcast. It was a show my husband and I recorded together. Our tagline was “The only podcast created exclusively while our kids are napping.” It was a couple of years later that I officially became a podcaster as the co-host of Broadcast (with my business partner Kim Goldman). We tackled current events and pop culture through a female lens.

Why did you start podcasting?

After a couple of decades working in TV, I saw the absolute gift that podcasting is — there’s nothing like it. There’s no other medium where one can communicate directly to their audience without time constraints or specific guidelines. It’s an incredible space to find your people and create a lasting connection.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

My show is called Forty Thrive and it connects women over 40 with the experts and resources they need to thrive. We tackle common — and taboo — challenges with honesty and humor.

What’s your podcasting set-up?

I absolutely love my new Shure MV7 and I’m a big fan of the Zoom H6. With those two pieces of equipment, I can record anywhere — which I have in the past. I have a couple of Samson Q2U mics I use on the go for guests. Or I just plug directly into my MacBook Air with Zoom software and make it super easy for my guests to pop in and share their brilliance.

How have you promoted your podcast?

Of course I’ve used the usual channels to promote Forty Thrive — email list, IG, Twitter, Facebook, etc. I’ve found great results when I’m able to speak live in front of an audience and look forward to doing that again sometime soon. I love being a guest on other shows talking about all things life over 40 as well as podcasting in general as I’m also a podcast coach and consultant for individuals and other media companies.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

We need to stop comparing ourselves to others. The most impactful people out there are the ones who blaze their own trail and aren’t concerned with what everyone else is doing. Your unique voice is exactly what someone needs to hear. Stop trying to please everyone and show up as the most authentic version of you. If you try to reach everyone, you’ll reach no one.
