Q & A with Ryan from The Green UP Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting ‘seriously’ at the end of 2013.  I have always been interested in podcasting, I have been listening to them for a couple years and felt it was something I could do.  But I wasn’t sure how to start, I had the tools just needed to find some direction.

Why did you start podcasting?

Jason from 7 Days a Geek was a huge help to get me into podcasting, he welcomed me into podcasting with an open door and answered all my annoying questions.

First thing I needed was something I loved and was passionate about.  I had been thinking about starting up my old gaming clan again and thought this was a perfect opportunity.  I could start both at the same time, I reached out to some old friends that I really loved spending time with and pitched the idea.

It took a few weeks to work out all the kinks but we finally found our way.

What’s your podcast about?

Green UP is about video gaming and friends.  The Green UP name is a throw back to the old Socom days, when you had to ‘green up’ to start the match.  Now we have moved onto the Xbox One, where most of our news/info is talked about, but I wanted to bring something more to our podcast.

I have spent countless hours in from of my tv playing games with my buddies and laughing my tail off.  Why not bring that to a bigger audience?

What’s your podcasting set-up?  Hardware, Software, CMS, etc.

My set up is simple and not the best out there, but we get it done week in and week out.  iMac, Call Recorder (I have 2 co hosts in Alabama, 1 in Ohio and 1 in Japan) Skype (duh) and I edit in Garage Band.

And of course I use only the best host LIBSYN!  I did buy a snowball mic when they went on sale, and love it!

I do remember the days before call recorder when I would record the call through my speakers into my mic…..yuck!

How have you promoted your podcast?

Promoting has been a tough work ethic to build.  With help from you guys, I have learned to spend time promoting.

Each night I type up a few tweets to be posted throughout the next day.  I had gotten lazy with my tweets, last podcast you guys had said how or why would anyone click a link when it says ‘heres my new episode’.

So I spend some extra time being creative and making sure to ‘@’ someone if I am talking about them.

Facebook, I make a post when we launch the episode and thats about it.

I just started to use google+ so I am hoping to grow with that.

I do a smaller episode every tuesday and thursday on spreaker and talk about the show there too.  Every thursday I do a GUTB ‘Green UP throw back’ and mention a couple of our older episodes.  And ask for our listeners to share the show with their friends.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

What do I wish I knew back when I started.  Set up, saved a little more $ to get everything day one.

Content, wish I would have spent a little more time on content and better day to day habits like chatting with people on twitter.

Asking more questions when I had them rather than being embarrassed to ask something.
